I was diagnosed last week with hyperemesis gravidarum, which is an extreme version of "morning" sickness. I have dropped 15 lbs (in 2 weeks) and had to be hospitalized to get fluids by IV. They gave me a prescription for Zofran, but it doesn't seem to be doing a ton of good- I still feel miserable.

Any other DISers go through this? What helped?

I'm so frustrated and sick and weak and I need some ideas. :guilty:

hey. hang in there, the Doctors will get yuo back on track :)

I had nausea with my first pregnancy and it did go away after the 13th week. I hope that's the case for you. Hang in there. I hope you feel better soon. :goodvibes

My frind had this with each of her three pregnancies. It was also severe and she was hospitalized each time. After 3 months she was OK. During her last pregnancy she gave those wrist bands a try and she did get relief not totally but considerably. I hope you feel better soon.

Give the Zofran a chance. It will not totally eliminate your symptoms, but it will help to make them manageable. (for me - throwing up 3-5 times a day instead of all day and evening!) I used to take it after I got sick so that I knew some would stay in my system.

:grouphug: I hope it passes quickly for you but yes, I had it, too with my first one. I actually had to have a nurse come to my home and set me up with an IV for several weeks because I could not keep a single thing down. It did pass by about my 16th week or so ~ not the sickness altogether but the extreme part of it at least. After I was able to start eating again, I quickly learned what my "trigger foods" were :sad2: and avoided those.

Good luck, congrats on the pregnancy and hang in there! :)

Are you looking for medical info on this, how to avoid vomiting or moral support?

(Happy to help in any way I can with any of the above, but don't know which hat to put on. :))

Thanks CB. I have been reading up on the medical aspect, and options... But it seems like most of what I find is that there's not *a lot* that can be done- it can't be cured, obviously, but I need to know what I can do to simply function.

Oh, and moral support would be much appreciated, too. I'm stressed and sick and so frustrated with this situation and with gagging/vomiting all day and not being able to eat ANYTHING that I have sat here and cried all day long.

Oh, don't cry, sweetie! I am thinking about you. And I hope this goes away soon so that you can enjoy your pregnancy like you ought to be able to do.

As you know, I'm no OB/GYN nurse (much less doc), but I dug out my old book and here's what it had for things to try to not be sick all the flippin time: Avoid odors, eat dry crackers or toast before getting out of bed in morning, have lots of small meals, avoid greasy or seasoned food, don't drink with your meals - drink little bits between meals, drink carbonated beverages.

The medical stuff is full of things you probably wouldn't be familiar with, but it did say they (in extreme cases, I think) put women on Total Parenteral Nutrition, which you have heard of. Yes, you have. It was my topic for Stupid Crap Day. :) I doubt it'll come to that for you.

Becky, I know I can't help, but if there is anything I can do, please pm.

Toby Keith Beckykid better be one appreciative little child who is very good to his/her mom. Or very flippin cute. :)

ETA: hyper = a lot, too much...emesis = vomit...gravidarum = you're pregnant

Becky! I told you a month ago this happened to me - I wasn't wishing it on you :-(

I did feel better after bing in the hospital for a few days - I was never 100% during the pregnancy, but really felt much better after the 4th or 5th month. Never could stand the taste of Coke for all 9 months, though!

I don't remember what the medication was called that I took, but I know I took one anti-emetic pill every morning the whole time :grouphug: And got addicted to nose spray - good times, good times :lmao:

I KNOW you will feel better soon. My doctor kept telling me it was a good sign, it means your hormones are really working!

I didn't have morning sickness to the extreme that you do, but my sympathies anyway :grouphug: I had it all day, all night, everyday. I never got dehydrated, simply lived on cheese & crackers, Granny Smith apples, and jello for 5 months. I couldn't even look at meat, let alone cook & eat it. The one collegue that was also pregnant sailed radiantly through her pregnancy with nary a burp, which made my associates think I was malingering.

Because I wasn't eating, i lost weight and became anemic. Keeping the iron down was a feat in itself--the alternative was shots! I did this with both my boys. With my middle child--erp! I was done. But those boys...I only gained 6lbs with #3 (and he was a 9lb baby!) due to non-stop nausea for the entire pregnancy. Not to be flippant, but I equated it with chemotherapy. If chemo is anything like morning sickness, I hope I never need that. :guilty:

:grouphug: It's hard to enjoy your pregnancy when you feel so bad. I'm not going to suggest any foods, because i know you've tried them all.Hopefully it will pass soon.

I had a mild version - needed the medication but did not need to be hospitalized for it. I could not go anywhere without a box of saltines for a couple of months. It did eventually go away though. I am sorry you are having to deal with this. :grouphug:

I had a friend who had this, after she got out of the hospital, she made sure she always ate. She nibbled throughout the day. She found that she felt better if she ate something every 2 hours.

With her 2 other pregnancies after that one, she did the same thing with the nibbling, and that made a huge difference.

Also, after the 3rd month, the symptoms subsided.

I came close to this with my twins. The dr's didn't even see what was happening. I was dropping weight every month and nauseous 24/7. I happened to see the practive mid-wife. She saw the weight loss, my iron levels and how tired I was. I fell asleep every night by 6 if I made it til then.
She put me on a shake with alot of nutrients and calories in it. This shake saved my life. I could keep it down. Two a day had enough calories to at least keep me even. Thanks to the black strap molasses in it my iron went back up.

Tried Zofran, and Compazine. Used both at home but had to be periodically hospitolized several times during each pregnancy.

I was 85 pounds and 6 months along with my daughter. Oh those were fun days!

For some reason making iced tea very weakly, ( with the powdered mix) Helped a little..

Peaches were also ok. I ate peaches and drank iced tea and then puked them up all freaking day long...

The last pregnancey I was on the zofran and IV pepcid every 3 days. and that was a little bit better. It WILL GET better. although I know when your lieing with your face on the bathroom floor it doesn't seem like it will ever end.

I promise it will. :wizard:

I was never sick enough for hospitalization...but I was pretty sick. I even threw up the anti-nausea medicine.

I did try accupuncture. It did not "cure me" but it brought my m/s down to a manageable level. The only thing I hated that due to the spot they do it on--every single time I would get sick as if on cue right when leaving.

I was sick to the point of hospitalization with both of my pregnancies. It was a miserable time. My prayers are with you. I know what it is like to throw up all day long.

I lived off of toast, apples, and ginger ale.

I hope things get better for you after the first few months. Then it will all be worth it when you hold that beautiful new baby.

:grouphug: and some pixie dust to help the Zolfon to kick in! Feel better, soon.

I've never had this, but I do have bad chronic reflux. Before my Dr. found the medication that helps me, I relied a lot on something called Relief Bands. This is NOT the little pressure-point band that you buy in the drugstore. It's a device used for chemo patients. It stimulates some nerve that causes nausea to be reduced. I bought mine on Ebay, but you can also buy them at places like drugstore.com. Here is the link:
