My husband and I are having an argument over our above ground (16') pool. It has rained a lot the past week and one on side of the pool the ground has shifted and one or two legs are tilted, causing the side to tilt in. It's enough to see from far away.

I am worried and do not want to let the kids swim in it. I think we should drain it, fix the ground, and refill. My husband thinks it will be fine, that the water pressure will hold it up. I think it can collapse/cave in.

My husband has put this all on me and said "I need to tell the kids they can't be in the pool" (which, btw, I'm fine with, but I'm not happy with his attitude). It's gotten pretty heated and I'm pretty much in tears.

I wasn't going to say who thought what, but figured you guys would figure it out anyway.

What do you think? Have you had/known a pool to collapse when the legs were uneven and it was tilting?

I think you are right. If you have any doubt that it may not be safe you are right and he is being a jerk for not supporting you with the kids! Sorry you are upset.

Can you have a pool person come have a look before you empty, fix and refill in case it is OK?

Kind of hard to explain, Sandra. 3/4 of the pools sides/legs look perfectly upright, but on the left quarter, it's tilted inward.

All I know is having your pool collapse is bad. My parents had an above ground pool installed years ago and right after they finished filling it, it collapsed and flood our neighbors backyard and basement. They sued my parents for damages and then my parents had to go after the pool company because it wasn't installed correctly. Draining a pool is a much better situation than having it drain itself :)

My aunt has a 16' pool. They put it in last year and during the summer one side started to sink but not enough to notice the side bending (the water level was about 6" lower on one side). They drained it this spring and leveled it, she said her water bill was only $9 more when they refilled it. So I would drain it and level it, the water will not be that much.

I agree with you OP. Drain it, fix it and refill it.

have you ever watched America's funniest videos when they have a pool collapse? I would not want to be in the pool if that happened!!

I think it's better to be safe than sorry. I know people that have had above ground pools implode because of stress. It's not worth risking a serious injury over.

In theory your DH is probably right, the water pressure usually will hold it, BUT if the structure is compromised and the ground shifts again, that is a different story. I would drain it and fix it.

My husband owns a pool business and he said it's definitely something to fix. Not only is there the flooding potential someone mentioned, but he said that if the side ruptures with the kids in it they'll be washed through an exit with potentially jagged edges. Definitely stand your ground on this one!

Thank you!

Better safe than sorry, plus it looks bad. You can probably drain it and pull that corner aside so that wil put less work on him. As far as his attitude, he's a man, when you disagreed with him, in his mind that means you don't trust his judgement to take care of his family. He'll get over it.;)

My friends pool had the same issue last season because their filter was leaking and sand eroded badly in that area. The deck around the pool obscured it from view though. We had a very hard rain, pool got overful and lining tore over 25% of width, pool sides buckeled, pool was a complete loss.

You're right. I didn't look at it that way.

I'm not concerned about a loss of the pool. It was only about $450. I just don't want my kids hurt. Or my house flooded, for that matter.
