Hurricane Milton - WDW Resorts Related Updates & Planning Thread

I've wondered about some of the DVC resorts during a hurricane. If you are at BoardWalk Villas, you are in the same building as BoardWalk Inn. But if you are at BeachClub Villas, it's a different building from Beach Club resort; there are no restaurants or shops in the Beach Club Villas building. Same thing regarding Wilderness Lodge: Copper Creek rooms are within the Wilderness Lodge main building, but Boulder Ridge is a separate building. There are no restaurants or shops in the Boulder Ridge building.

So I've wondered what it's like to be at BCV or Boulder Ridge during a hurricane. No matter how well the guests in the main building are being treated, I would think it would be difficult (if not impossible) to get to the main building during the brunt of the storm.

You wouldn't want to go outside while the winds are up, but when the eye passes there is a break that would allow it. Generally I'd recommend putting enough food in your room to last at least about 8 hours. Truthfully, if this storm crosses Orlando at C4 or higher, then it is likely that hotels would advise guests to shelter in the hallways during the worst of it due to the risk of windows blowing in.

Has a hurricane ever hit direct like that to WDW?
Hurricane Frances hit pretty direct, but it wasnt this strong.

Hurricane Ian was a direct hit. It was a 4 at landfall, but lost a lot of energy as it moved inland.

We rode out Jeanne in 2004 at BCV. Once we were in lockdown, could not cross to the BC proper at all, so no food or any of the fun activities they were doing to keep everyone occupied…just an endless loop of Disney cartoons on the room TV 🤪. Luckily we were able to pick up some food/beverages on the Boardwalk before everything closed. Once the storm lessened a bit, they wheeled over a cart with bagged lunches, but guests still couldn’t leave the building until the “all clear”. I don’t think there were very many cast members in the building with us either. After the storm, we were amazed at how fast they got all the debris cleaned up, replacement flower beds planted, and parks opened. 48 hours later you almost couldn’t tell a hurricane had hit.

Kind of annoying Disney I guess is communicating this stuff through TAs and other channels and not their public info (or at least that I can find), but a report from Blogmickey on extending their flexible modification policy now through 10/13 (it was 10/12 per an announcement yesterday)…https://blogmickey.com/2024/10/walt...odifications-and-cancellations-due-to-milton/

In an update, Walt Disney World has announced that its hurricane policy will now be extended to guests checking in through Sunday, October 13th. Here’s the update:

  • Due to potential weather impacts to guest travel plans, change and cancellation fees imposed by Disney will be waived for check-in dates of Sunday, 10/6 – Sunday, 10/13.
  • Most room-only and vacation packages can be modified, or cancelled online, including changes to travel dates, without fees. Packages including air transportation or other services provided by third parties, or those with travel protection, cannot be modified or cancelled online. For Guests with these reservations, please call us for assistance.

I’ve lived on the Gulf Coast for most of my life, but I also lived in North Texas for over ten years. This hurricane has the potential to be like one of those severe thunderstorms, but with high winds and heavy rains continuing for many, many hours, battering a wide area for a much longer time than those thunderstorms do. And with a tornado thrown in too.

I’m not as much concerned for impacts on WDW (although there would be some). I’m concerned about impacts on Orlando infrastructure and especially on CMs, whose homes might be damaged, without power for several days, etc. in addition to having to navigate flooded or blocked streets the first day or so after Milton passes. The trouble is that we just won’t know until it happens.

I totally understand. I had the misfortune of sitting on Pensacola Beach during Hurricane Opal (1995) I had just finished SERE training and we got 2 weeks of R&R and my fellow Marine Buddy was from LaPlace, La and kept telling us it would be no big deal....yea, that was wrong. I knew I shouldn't trust an LSU graduate :) Nothing like being in a Cat 3 hurricane with nothing between you and the ocean but a 20' berm. haha. As a young Marine of 23 who had never been in a hurricane it wasn't fun. When the storm finally went through, everything on the first floor was flooded and sand was probably a foot deep, it pushed everything to the front of the condo. We were on the 2nd floor and couldn't do anything about it.

I’m here now on a solo trip, staying on the Paddocks building at SSR. I was supposed to fly home on Thursday but that may not be possible. I did go to the front desk and secured my room for one extra night. Unfortunately, at this time, the desk clerk said if i can fly on Thursday, and wont need the room, the points will go into holding, but she also said to call member services later, after all of the rebooks have settled down, andMS might return to points to my contract. So far, no word from SSR concerning the storm. I certainly hope i dont need to shelter in my exposed hallway.

If you do have points go into holding, MS will reverse that when you call them. And if things get really bad, with concerns about windows breaking, just go into the bathroom and close the door. That will be better shelter than those open hallways.

I saw this answer as well on a Reddit thread, that once able to move between buildings they will try and get food to you via bagged lunches. Often the DVC buildings have snack and drink machines, but obviously wouldn’t be restocked during a storm.

Truly! It was amazing. It took an extra day to get the WL pool cleaned up, but a few days later it looked back to normal.

Thank you for keeping us updated!! 🙏

Keeping tabs because we were due to arrive at WDW on 10/10, flying in from Philly. That’s been changed, and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Hmm they don't seem worried about the Polynesian Bungalows. Maybe they are not worried about Storm surge on the Seven Seas Lagoon only the areas with a heavy tree canopy.

Dave

Anyone know what Disney does if you are supposed to check-out the day the hurricane hits/is there?

I can’t imagine the lagoon is big enough/holds enough water to impart a storm surge risk to that degree. But the ground is already so wet that treefall could be a big issue.

My sister evacuated to WDW. She had a night in the middle where she never could get a room. It took multiple calls, but they were able to accomodate her, her daughter, and their dog for a single 4-night stay. Ymmv.
