Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

This may sound silly but if I were one of the people with their pets in the Pet care place I'd be going crazy. I know they are going to have a ride out crew there but they are shutting down so as well as worrying about yourself and your family you are also going to have to worry about your pet and the brave people taking care of them. I can't imagine those dogs and cats are going to comfortable with the noise and it's not going to be pleasant not being able to take them outside. I would almost be tempted to try to book a room off property at a pet friendly facility and pick mine up. Yes, I'm a crazy pet owner.

As others have said, their barns are built as hurricane shelters. Next time you are there, if you ride the train from AK to Rafiki's Planet Watch you can see some of the barns. We were told their keepers will stay back and ride out the storm in the barns with the animals.
That is awesome. I remember seeing the barns now. I knew AK would have a plan. I admire the dedication of the keepers.

Does anyone know how AK cares for the animals in these conditions? I know that seems a strange thing to worry about, but I'm a worrier!

I can only imagine how hard and fast the CMs are working, and I imagine there are many hunkering in at work rather than going home to their families.

Thanks CMs for doing what you do.

Stay safe.

I happened to take a behind the scenes at the tour - the Elephants had enough room for all of the animals and really strong walls. Well thought it and protected.

Poly is giving out selling (I should've known we were given wrong info, ha!) boxed lunch and breakfast, but I still see folks walking around with grocery bags full of food from Capt Cooks & Moana Mercantile.

ADR system has been shut down to allow resort guests walk ups. Cancellation policy has been dropped. The hotel is telling people not to panic - they have plenty of food for at least 3-4 days.

Kona is on limited menu...and could even go to Ohana style buffet. They really are impressively prepared.

Floyd was a 3 and it wasn't anywhere near as close as this one is.
I was there (in WDW). It was headed straight for Orlando, just like this one. It was a HUGE hurricane. At one point the winds were at 155 MPH - stronger than this storm. It missed. This one might, too.

You're not silly, I thought this too. I've used the pet care there before, and worried about my dogs when all was well. If I was there now, and they were in the facility, I would be completely distraught.

This is as close as Floyd Ever got.

Got the rental car parked at Disney springs garage so it should be good there

Made it back to the room ok minus a little scuffle at the bus stop....a few people didn't want to move down the line because they were "here first" yet they were standing in the second queue. I ended putting the chains up and the rest of the people moved around them. They eventually "fell in line"

It's a bus. It holds 72 people aprox. we all got on!

Our sweet Dobbie is there and she's prob safer than we are. Best Friends Pet boarding is an official hurricane storm shelter for locals. The building is solid concrete. Our dog may even be sharing their kennel with a local pet.

And this storm my start moving off shore now. What is your point?

My point is that Matthew is nothing like Floyd and shouldn't be thought of the same.

People need to continue to prepare for something that might be extremely terrible.

Alot of times people do not take these things seriously, and need to.

Disney will keep everyone safe though. I do not have a doubt in my mind

That's great to know! Wow. How cool.

my sat am flight (9.45am from BWI to MCO) was just cancelled. Looks like MCO isn't expecting to reopen...

Interesting. Either that, or the flight path from BWI will still be affected by the active storm. I have a flight Saturday morning from Atlanta. I'll post if that gets cancelled.

To take this thought further - my family has a vacation planned for Thanksgiving week. A cruise hitting many of the islands just impacted by this storm. We have decided to cancel that cruise because those islands will not be ready for us by then. Sure, they will want our $$$, as will the cruise line, but we will wait until everything has had time to be safely repaired.

We went on a cruise for our honeymoon in October of 2004. We were supposed to go to the Grand caymons but from the hurricanes that year the ports were destroyed and got routed to Costa Maya instead.

My coworker is planning to fly in on Saturday and staying until Wednesday of next week. He's considering cancelling but would lose $800 in air fare. He's wondering if he should take a chance and go. Any advice you experienced travelers can give him?
