Hurricane Katrina Update

Everyone "riding it out" please please please reconsider! Please.. they are saying that any wooden structures will be flattened.... if you can leave.. LEAVE... your lives are more important than anything. Just leave for ONE day... They are saying those who stay will have no help as ER vehicles will be unable to get to them. This hurricane is the 4th largest in history.. not a small might turn away.. THIS is the BIG ONE. please please leave.. I"m sick with worry for those chosing to stay...

Baton Rouge is quite a distance from the Gulf coast and NOLA. In fact lots of people are evacuating to BR to get away from the storm surge. But, tornados are still possible.

thoughts and prayers here from NJ

although we never experience these types of storms, I have seen them on the news and they are just terrifying.

PLEASE>>>>>>>>.

anyone who has been asked to evacuate,,please do so.
It is only for you and your families safety
please don't jeapordize that

hope to hear from all of you when storm is over :grouphug:

Prayers are being offered from Champaign, Illinois. May you all be safe and protected.

If we don't hear from you guys for a while, we'll understand that most likely your phones are out, and your Internet connections probably will be as well. Please stay safe! :grouphug:

I too am praying for all those in the path of the hurricane. I hope you all stay safe.

We are located in a little town called Rayville, LA. Thankfully, we are too far north to be in danger. I just got off I-20 and the road is really, really busy. Lots of RV's, people pulling stg. trailers, and jam packed cars. DD is sooo worried about people with little babies who don't have hotel rooms as all are booked. I worry about people in the New Orleans area who do not have any transportation, There are alot of poor people who do not own cars. I hear they are using the Super Dome as a shelter, lets all prey that building can weather the storm safely.
Son and sweet DIL live on the Louisiana coast to the west of hit zone. They are staying put as both are teachers and the powers that be there aren't even canceling school because they are on the "safe" side. I prey they are right.
We are preying for the safety of all effected by this storm and ask that all our friend on the Dis do the same. :grouphug:

Prayers your way from Central Alabama...in fact, I've been praying for 2-3 days! This storm looks awful! I can't imagine how awful it must be for you all. I've got a friend near the AL coast I am worried sick about.

They said on the weather channel a few moments ago that 59% of the folks that die in hurricanes die from inland flooding. Ivan destroyed the Alabama Gulf Coast last year. I seem to remember that with Ivan and Dennis this year that a lot of people lost their lives in Georgia as a result of the flooding.

So please, please, please! Those of you further inland (maybe as far north as Tennessee) need to be careful and take precautions as well. The Weather Channel guy said it could still be a Cat 1 hurricane when it reaches us on Tuesday. The area we are in doesn't flood, so I'm not so worried about my family and flooding. Spinoff tornadoes, however, are a real possibility.

I'm afraid the whole southern US will need the help of our fellow countrymen before this is over.

Hi, Tinkerbell.
We have decided to stay and ride it out at home. We are as prepared as we can be. There are so many factors affecting this storm. Normally if you are on the western side of a hurricane you have minimal effects. Well, because Katrina is so large and so powerful it looks like all of southeast La. will be affected in some way. I kept trying to convince my dh to head to WDW, but he just wouldn't go for it (lol). We also have a home in Mississippi near McComb, we were not able to go and make any preparations there. We will just have to wait until after the storm passes to see how well it fares. I have lived in La. most of my life, but this will be the strongest storm I have ever experienced. The live news conference on TV just said that the storm now has sustained winds at 175 miles per hour!!! Thank you for all your prayers. I will post as I can.
Kim

Our preacher is from around Rayville. It really is a "Small World". His wife, daughter and grand-daughter are on their way back from visiting family there this past week.

Anyway, the southern gulf states, especially LA, MS, FL and GA have my prayers. We are expecting flooding and strong wind here in TN, I can only imagine how bad it will be for the ones further south. :worried:

Stay safe and out of harm's way!

God Bless!!

Continuous prayer and pixie dust from Oklahoma. The kids and I will remember all of you in the storms path in our prayers tonight. Sending truckloads of pixie dust! :grouphug:

I have to agree with CinRell and Jackie H please please please reconsider if you are in its path. Life is way to precious and too short to risk it for property or for just the chance that it may not strike your area that hard. We will continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

We decided to stay put because we are not in a low lying area (prone to flooding). The interstate highways are bumper to bumper with people trying to get out of low lying areas (New Orleans). We didn't want to add to the congestion. We have a generator and plenty of supplies. Hopefully we will be on the west side of the storm's eye. Thank you for everyone's prayers. Also any Diser's north of us and in the projected path need to get prepared for some bad storms, tornados, and possible flooding. I'll post as I can.

Oh you guys staying put please be safe! I am so worried for you all! Most of us have no idea just how powerful this storm is! If it stays at cat 5 it is going to be devastating. I am so worried for everyone in this path!! I sure hope that superdome holds up well for all those people inside. It is so scarey! Hubby and I have been watching it almost all day. We just can not even imagine. The worst one I was in was Hugo in 89! That was really bad where we were. Not a cat 5 though.

My prayers to everyone near this terrible storm.

My heart breaks for New Orleans people. I read 60-80% of people will loose their homes. :( That is devastating.

is all we can do now is pray that all those are safe and come out safe as i always say You have to climb the walls nature throughs at you and hope you come out safe

My prayers are with you all!!
As if this storm was not bad enough to worry about, I heard on the news that you must be careful for all the poisonous snakes. I did not catch the whole story on why this is (my DD6 was being too loud and I could not hear the whole story, SORRY). Being from Mass., I would never of even thought about snakes being a problem. So, PLEASE, PLEASE be careful!!!!! :grouphug:

We were in New Orleans this past june visiting DH's aunt. It was my first time there and I was amazed when I saw the pumps around the city to drain the water when it rains. DH's aunt was so excited about fixing up her house, she added landscaping, new paint, new trim and a new driveway she was saying that it took her a long time to save to get her house to look how she wanted it. We also talked about hurricanes and that her whole neighborhood would be flooded even if they got a category 1 :sad2: My FIL spoke to her this morning, she said that her cousin who lives in Baton Rouge was there ready to take her to their home. She took some clothes, important documents and her photo albums. I feel so sad, all this 70 yr old woman has is that house, her first house that she bought a few years ago and now it may be gone. I know it is only a material posession and she has insurance, but, she was so proud of that house. FIL says she sounded really worried when he spoke to her. :worried: I hope everyone stays safe ... God Bless

Snakes are a worry for those of us here in the South during these storms. We have quite a few poisonous snakes, and during these storms they get pushed out of their habitats and into areas where there are people. Also watch out for those Gators!! There's gonna be water EVERYWHERE!!

I will be keeping all of those in the path of this massive storm in my thoughts and prayers. Be safe, and take care.

Dana
