Huge toy sale at Wal-Mart

I don't know if this is chain-wide or just at the store I visited, but I came across some amazing toy prices at Wal-Mart this afternoon. I bought six Lego sets for under $30 -- Harry Potter Dumbledore's office, dueling club (got two of those), something with a goblin; an NBA basketball setwith four players and a little court; and a skateboarding set with a half-pipe. I got Dumbledore for DS's birthday and at least a couple of the others to use for birthday gifts for other kids. I was nice and gave him one of the dueling club ones a few minutes ago -- a pretty neat surprise for $2 and it was originally $19.97!

There were lots of other toys, too, including quite a few other Legos.

Lego annouced earlier this month that they will discontinue the lego tie in product lines (anything they have to pay a license for) due to the cost of the licenses. They will continue to make the Bionical line, but are going back to a more basic product, more like the legos of my childhood. I will miss the starwars legos. This may be why they were on sale. I have been checking regularly, because I assumed they would start to clear them from the shelves soon.

If you have never been to their website check it out. It is great. Free games, information on how they make legos (they use robots!) and all sorts of fun stuff. I don't have it handy but google will turn it up.

HaleyB -- There were some Star Wars sets at Wal-Mart, too. There were a couple of good sets in the $5 bin and some small stuff in the $2 one. There also was one great big one for $15.

I guess that explains the cuts. It seemed strange to me since there will be another Harry Potter movie in a few months.

Good luck, Jacksmom! We have two Wal-Marts here, and I actually went to the one furtherest from my house this afternoon. I may have to check out the other one, too.

Lego Clears Up Rumors of the Star Wars Line's Demise

It would be wise not to count Star Wars out of Lego's repertoire just yet.



Since the announcement last week of Lego taking some hard losses, confusion has been floating around regarding the state of Lego's Star Wars line, so we went to Lego to get the official story and here is what they had to say about the matter:

In the last few days, I've seen much discussion, and recevied many questions about the future of the company. As you probably saw/heard, 2003 was a rough year for the LEGO Company, for a number of reasons. Kjeld has retaken the helm, and has said that we are returning to "our core". Rest assured, "our core" simply means our toy business. Which is to say, our toy product lines present and future.

Licenses

Harry Potter and Star Wars are NOT going away any time soon. Licenses are not going to stop, simply continue to improve. We have to take (and have taken) steps to ensure we manage the peaks and valleys that licensing brings with it (Movie years vs. non-movie years, for example). We are still going to be going after the top licenses with the right brand fit. In fact, we have announced what I think is going to be a great license today: Dora the Explorer

Mindstorms

Mindstorms is not going away, but may continue to evolve. Like all technology products, Mindstorms will continue to grow and improve as consumers gain new technology knowledge and technology itself continues to get better and smaller.

WWYM Line

Another fear I've heard is that the "What Will You Make?" line is going away. This is not true, and the 2003 product line showed great success and potential. Stay tuned for more great WWYM products in 2004!

There you have it, to borrow from an already-overused quote, the rumors of the Star Wars line's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Lego isn't going away any time soon, and look for more Star Wars Lego product later this year.

Went to my local WalMart and they had no toys on clearance.

My local one was still at the prices they were right after Christmas, but we went shopping 50 miles away today & that store had wonderful deals. Markdowns are based on store sales, the better a store does, the quicker they are allowed to mark down items.

Our Walmart had really high clearance prices (higher than sales before Christmas) Also a lot of really old stuff.
