My suggestion is to proactively engage the characters. I find if you ask questions and show enthusiasm, they will reciprocate. Even if they are quiet or shy by nature, it's difficult to ignore a big personality. So if you play the part, they will play the part. Especially if you hit them with conversation they aren't used to. Most of the time, visitors are talking about the things from the movie. They probably get bored and/or have canned answers/reactions. Maybe go beyond the movie - ask them who THEIR favorite princesses are, or what's their favorite ride in the Magic Kingdom.
Now, some of you may say, "I'm a paying guest. I shouldn't have to work for a good show." But the reality is, like everything else in life, the more you give, the more you get.
