How's this for weird - Japanese custard pudding Kit Kat, meant to be baked

My kid is now obsessed with Japanese Kit Kat. We can find a few stores that have them - in various flavors such as green tea, chestnut, raspberry, etc. I think they have durian too but I haven't seen it. But my kid found out about these custard pudding ones which I guess are supposed to be similar to toasted flan or what Chinese bakeries call "Portuguese style" egg custard tarts.

We don't read Japanese and didn't look up instructions, so we just popped a couple of pieces in a toaster over for three minutes and it just melted without browning. And it just made a mess too. A little closer look at the package (and YouTube) shows that it's supposed to be frozen first, which I suppose keeps it from melting too quickly while it browns. So overnight in the freezer and tried it again where it did work. I'm not quite sure what the point is other than they do all sorts of strange things in Japan.

Japanese Kit Kats are really...different. Some good, some meh.

I don't like green tea, so those ones were meh for me. Also raspberry (don't like that flavor either) or wasabi (ick). The Yuzu Sake was ok, but not amazing.

Liked the dark chocolate, strawberry, Morison (cranberry w/almonds), mint, baked ice cream, and strawberry cheesecake ones.

There's an international market here that sometimes gets Japanese Kitkats in and two years ago they had Cookies and creme ice cream flavored ones. I am not even joking when I say they were the best candy bar I'd ever put in my mouth. Actually tasted like ice cream and even cooled your mouth. Other flavors have been hit or miss.

I would 100% try those custard ones.

There are hundreds of different kitkat varieties in Japan - I remember going to a popup store/cafe in Tokyo once where they supposedly had every flavor. I would totally try those custard ones.

I have had sake ones (with real sake) and have seen soy sauce ones, but didn't try those. Lavender, melon, green tea, rum raisin are some others that I have tried. Finding those flavors are a lot of fun!

I would try those custard pudding ones just because it is so different.

When traveling internationally my family always stops in a local grocery store to look around and see what we can try that we can't get back home.

Sure it is all junk food but it is NOT the same you can get back at home.

Have you come across the ones with the origami paper wrappers yet? They were supposed to debut last fall but our Asian market hasn't gotten them yet.

DD18 adores the matcha flavor Kit Kats, and I liked the lavender ones she brought home, but if she tried the custard ones while she was there, she didn't mention them. They sound like too much work for a piece of candy to me!

I've seen the occasional American (i.e. Hershey) Kit Kat that wasn't the ordinary milk chocolate. We went around looking for Mint Duo.

I don't normally see white or dark even though that's on their list of active versions. I saw strawberry once but I'm not sure where to find it now.

Did find raspberry creme, which seems to be a special version for Valentines Day. But this is the place my kid really wants to go. Not sure about going to Japan just to get Kit Kat, but I guess everyone has a hobby.

Hey, if it starts the journey so be it! Personally, I would see this as my "in" to visit Toyko Disneyland and Disney SEA again. (that is my hobby)

And take your child to a 7-11. The difference between our crummy ones to theirs . . . night and day! Who knew a 7-11 could have such good food!?!

Depending on the time of year, Tokyo Disney Resort is cheaper than WDW, including airfare. We are in NYC and were trying to price a one week trip to either WDW or Tokyo and Tokyo was cheaper. We lose a day of travel, so not exactly apples to apples, but for the most part hotel, airfare, tix plus approx food costs came out in favor of Tokyo. My daughter really wanted to go to WDW so we are going to Orlando instead (grrrr lol) but if you plan it right, it's not such a crazy trip price-wise.

My kids love all the mini-marts (including 7-11) - it is the highlight of our trips to Japan! Actually, I love them too!

My kid actually knows about Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea and has asking about that. Really wants to go. My only issue is the language barrier, but I suppose technology helps, and there are enough people speaking English.

I say take the plunge!

It is pretty easy to navigate around Tokyo. The subway system is in Japanese and English, no language barrier there. (Just avoid taking it during rush hour.) Most people will speak at least a little English, and we got by knowing only basic Japanese phrases. The people there are very nice, they want to help you. Never had a problem. And Google Maps is your friend.

The only thing we laughed about was at Tokyo Disney. The Japanese culture is so reserved and quiet, but put them in Disney SEA to ride TSMM, they are cutthroat! LOL. They ran, I mean RAN. It was so funny to see such a contrast. And the food at TDLR, really REALLY good. Love their unique popcorn and cool buckets too. My daughter had to have a Duffy one since he is huge over there.

Tokyo is a foodie town for sure! We cannot wait to go back.
