How would you pronounce Elodie?

When you see that name, how do you pronounce it in your head?

Ell-oh-DEE

or

ELL-oh-dee

eh - LOW - dee

The boards are malfunctioning again. My post appears before the OP.

From glancing at it I'd have pronounced it "Eee-Low-Dee", with the Eee a little more pronounced than the other syllables. But now that I see it's supposed to be a name, I'd think someone misspelled "Melody" so I'd pronounce it like that but without the M.

(After Googling, I see that neither of those is even remotely correct since it's French. As an American, I'd never have come up with the correct pronunciation!)

....at first, I was thinking that it ought to be pronounced like 'Melody' but without the 'm', but I'm thinking ee-LOW-dee....:confused3 ummmm, and why is this an issue?

Not an "issue" really, just a question. I would pronounce it like Melody with no M.

We are considering it as a name for our baby if it's a girl...but I don't want to name her a name that she'll be explaining the pronunciation her entire life.

If I got a wide range of answers/pronunciations, I'd take that into consideration when naming her.

If you want it to be like Melody, you need to use Ellodie (two LLs), I was totally thinking ee-low-dee when I first read the name. I would avoid the name, you are only going to have problems.

.....soooooooo, what you're REALLY saying is, you don't like the letter "M"?

....mebbe she should name her 'KellyDelly'......:teeth: :rolleyes1

I like the way Ellodie looks and it seems easier to pronounce too. Thanks for the suggestion.

I automatically pronounced it like Melody without the M.

I think it's a pretty name and prefer it over Melody. :goodvibes

:rotfl: I suppose not!

Honestly, Melody reminds me of a bully in my middle school. And it seems a little 80's to me...a little dated...for my personal tastes.

Guess I shouldn't talk about "80's names" since my 2 year old is named Amy.:confused3;)

Definitely consider this once or twice. As you can see from the small sampling on this thread there is no real consensus on this pronunciation. Your daughter could very well spend a lot of her life spelling and correcting pronunciation of her name. Are you(and she!) going to be okay with this or will this be tiresome over the long haul?

My first impression was that you would call her eh-LOW-dee. But ELL-oh-dee would also work. My DD18 is named Eleni, a very common name for Greek girls. NOT at all common for American girls. You can't imagine how many ways we have heard name (forget spelling it right). The correct pronuciation is eh-LEN-ee. But we hear uh-LANE-ee, eye-LEEN-ee, ELLEN-ee, and you-LAY-lee. :confused3 And it probably doesn't help that we have a 10-letter Greek last name that gets mispronounced 40 ways to Sunday. Fortunately, Eleni is okay with it, although she has taken to calling herself Elle lately. :goodvibes

LOL.......I would have guessed eh-LEN-ee, which is correct, or ELLEN-ee.

Personally, not crazy about Elodie or Ellodie, but my opinion doesn't matter, as it's not my child. I know many people weren't crazy about one of my DD's names either.........Ashlyn. Oh well...........

If you do use two ll's like Ellodie it still might be pronounced ellow-die with the die sounding like die/death. I would go with Ellodee.
