How would you pronounce Elodie?

We know an Elodie who pronounces it like Melody without the M. I like the name.

Elodie is a perfectly beautiful, legitimate name all on it's own. I would pronounce it as Melody without the M. I think it's a lovely name and I would not compromise it by using a phonetic spelling. Ellodie and Ellodee are not flattering changes, IMO, but I am not a fan of unique, creative, or phonetic spelling variations. I say use the traditional spelling and explain when necessary, which I don't think will be terribly often.

Elodie - I would pronounce it El-LOH-dee.
Ellodie - I would still pronounce it El-LOH-dee.

When you say it should rhyme with Melody, that makes sense, but it's still not my first thought. Elody might make that a little more obvious.

Seriously if I saw the name Elodie (which I have never seen it before) I would say
E-low-die

I work in a middle school cafeteria and I always ask the kids how to say their name if it is not a name I am familiar with.

One of the French foreign exchange students that came over in high school was named Elodie. It was pronounced, Elle-oh-dee. I love the name and wanted to name my first daughter Elodie, but the DH doesn't like it, hmph

I know it's really none of my business, but I am going to chime in as an adult with a different spelling of a common name........

Please don't give your kids a weird name with a weird spelling!!!

It is annoying pretty much every day of your entire life. I have been spellling my first name for my entire life and then 20 years ago I married a wonderful man with a wonderfully ethnic last name. I now get the pleasure of spelling my entire name and then constantly correcting everyone who mispronounces my last name.

I gave each of my children completely common names with common spellings so at least they only have to deal with spelling their last name. I tell my daughter to find a lovely man with a easy last name!!!;) We'll see how much she listens to me!

That's a beautiful French name. Do not change the spelling. I can still hear my mom saying that name with her French accent. She had a friend named Elodie, although when she pronounced it, it was more like El-o-dzie. I love it Melody without the M.

Elodie rhymes with Melody.

It's funny. I too have an "uncommon" (read: correct) spelling of my name Jeannette. Two "n"s... it's French. EVERYONE, I mean EVERYONE spells it wrong until I tell them two "n"s... even if they've seen it in writing. I also had many teachers pronounce it as Jean-Nette.

What's worse is I went from a wonderful French last name that I ALWAYS also had to spell (or pronounce) to a married name of 3 letters that is a VERY common word in the english language. Day. People ask me how to spell it. Really? Like ToDay not Tomorrow.

So moral of the story. Give your kid a name with a normal spelling. Elodie is beautiful, but even if you spell it phonetically, she'll probably still have spelling/pronunciation problems. No need to take away it's elegance by changing the spelling.. IMHO of course.

Had a friend in HS named Elodie and it sounded just like Melody without the M as others have said.

E-lo-dee

It really makes me think of Odie from Garfield :confused3

Elodie like Melody without the M.

Definitely consider this once or twice. As you can see from the small sampling on this thread there is no real consensus on this pronunciation.Your daughter could very well spend a lot of her life spelling and correcting pronunciation of her name. Are you (and she!) going to be okay with this or will this be tiresome over the long haul?

::yes::

My DD18 is named Eleni, a very common name for Greek girls. NOT at all common for American girls. You can't imagine how many ways we have heard name (forget spelling it right). The correct pronuciation is eh-LEN-ee. But we hear uh-LANE-ee, eye-LEEN-ee, ELLEN-ee, and you-LAY-lee. :confused3 And it probably doesn't help that we have a 10-letter Greek last name that gets mispronounced 40 ways to Sunday. Fortunately, Eleni is okay with it, although she has taken to calling herself Elle lately. :goodvibes

I thought ee-LANE-ee or uh-LANE-ee.

If you tell people it's French, I would have thought ZHEAN-netta.

Well, there is Susan Dey, from The Partridge Family & L.A. Law fame. And Doris Day. So people don't know which way to spell it.

I have a last name that is spelled exactly how it sounds. But, people ask me how it's spelled all the time and like to add in extra letters to fancy it up. When I verbally spell it out, I actually have to pause now after the letters where they would like to insert an extra letter or two, so that they are waiting for the next letter, instead of automatically inserting one. :headache:

I think the last sentence, bolded above, says it all.

I think Elle, is a very beautiful and simple French name!
Elle could also be short for many names such as Gabrielle.
And, there are many beautiful, not so simple, but easy to read and pronouce, French names.

IMHO, Elodie is not one of them.
Sorry, just being honest since opinions were requested.

:goodvibes
