How would you feel if there was a "Sambo" in your neighborhood?

What I don't understand is why a "color" which was and still is despised by so many is so important.?

Well, I can only speak for myself but I have never despised black people and when I tan.......I don't look like I have "black" skin. A tanned white person is a far cry from a black person. I just don't see how you can correlate the two. :confused3

So the connection that the Klan makes between the black man being an animal and exaggerating features to mock the differences between the bone structure of people is just political correctness run amuck?

Not just the KKK but the average run of the mill bigot - most of whom are gone but some have gone underground. Perhaps the statues are their way of recognising each other?! :confused3

Tiggersmom2 as I said before, tanning does not mean your trying to be a black person, but if a person is comfortable in their "own skin" why is it necessary to get some "color" when white skin was/is suppose to be superior to all others?

Again not to be offensive, but only asking a simple question.

I don't know many people with any color skin that believe white skin is superior to others. Tanning is just the fad now....kind of like name-brand jeans and halter-top shirts. It has nothing to do with any racial stuff.

BTW....I don't tan, don't have name-brand jeans, and wouldn't put a halter-top shirt on to save my life. Boy, am I 'yesterday'!

LOL, I wish white skin had some value to anyone other than my dermatologist! ....especially in the summertime. Truth is that skin that has some color, be it red, light brown, dark brown, etc...well, it just plain looks better in clothing. It looks healthier. It also hides imperfections, it's just pretty, IMHO. (no, I cannot get tan without the bottled crap, lol)

Isn't that where the superiority complex come in....Thinking they're better, superior because of skin color. That's what it all boils do to imho.

BTW, believe it or not your definitely not yesterday. :sunny:

The same could be said for wearing make-up....why do it if you are comfortable in your own skin? I think the answer is obvious.

Well, if you do indeed feel this way.....I believe you are in the minority. I don't for a second believe this is a prevailing attitude.

I will probably get flamed for this but I feel I must speak my .02!! Why is it that black people are so quick to claim discrimination? I mean ***?? A lawn jockey in a front yard?? They say that is discriminatory or the name Sambo? It just erks me to no end when they cry wolf about this stuff. What about us white folks that feel the NAACP is discriminating us? Can we have an association for white people? Why is there a black Miss America pageant and no white Miss America pageant? They can compete in the white one but there are no whites in theirs?? Sometimes I feel discriminated against when all these sensitive issues are brought to light. Why can't they just get over it and get on with life? Life is too short to moan and groan about what statues are in front of a neighbor's house or an old restaurant name!
:confused3 I've asked this same question for years but God forbid you ask it outloud. Its a double standard and I'm supposed to hang my head low for a lot of "perceived" injustices. Do I think slavery was a bad thing? Absolutely. But where does it stop? I'm proud of my heritage and refuse to hide and pretend I'm not white. Not everything in the universe is about a racial issue...sometimes it's just a thing. And I think a lot of white people make a big deal out of things they think others will get offended from so they look "PC"...just trying too hard to point out "I'm not a racist". Now I'm going to walk away because I'm sure I'll get slammed for this but I suppose my opinion is just as valid as anyone elses.

Interesting.
It comes from wanting what you don't have...I always wanted black hair, dark skin and eyes. I think they are pretty. I have red hair, plain pale skin ad green eyes. Go figure, LOL

Some go for a healthy appearance..others go to the extreme. Some just do not like the look of their skin t-o-n-e--but their could be other things as well. I have a tan--but to most people I look pale face. My tan is the result of living in Florida. Ever since I moved here in 1992 I have used sunscreen for long outdoor activities such as the beach, swimming, or a sports day. I don't wear it all the time b/c I just don't like slathering up to go outdoors.

I like my skin tone--but it is a result of my habitat and not an achievement. And to me a little too dark---but like I said--to ordinary people...I only look dark next to a pasty-white complexion. I'm actually on the pale side.

As far as the lawn jockey go I could care less what you put on your lawn.

I like Aunt Jamima pancakes and Mrs.Butterworth syrup. I don't see anything wrong with that nor do I look at white people crazy for buying it.

As far as the, Why is there a black Miss America Pagent and No white America Pagent take a look back in history. Minorities were not allowed to participate in these pagents which I'm sure you knew this.

You all had the White Miss America Pagents for years while minorities stood on the sidelines. Now some of you claim to not understand *WHY* African Americans have our own Magazines,Award Shows,Cothing lines, Pagents and the Naacp ect... If you don't understand why--maybe it's not for YOU to understand.

Another thing, don't show ignorance telling people to get over something when you have no clue of what minorities went thru back in the day, and still going thru now in some parts.

Even though there is still racism though not as bad as it was during the times of slavery, as a black woman I would never tell someone who went thru slavery to "get over it" no more than I would tell a Jewish person to get over their feelings about the Holocaust.

BTW, I must say I find it very ironic that years ago and today we black people were made fun of for our skin tone, full lips, hair and everything else you can think of, but now -and-*** NOT TO OFFEND ANYONE HERE**** you have these white woman all over having butt and body fat injected into their lips for a *fuller pout* and other parts of their body.

If big lips are so bad why do you want them and please tell me why is tanning such a big deal:confused3

I'm not trying to offend anyone with my question but I would really like to know..anyone?
Because I thought it was about "EQUAL" rights, not special rights. To complain about how things were done solely for the white man, then turn around and do the same exact thing you claim to hate is obsurd to me. Racism isn't just a white disease. It expands across all races and ethnicities. Equal is equal....nothing more, nothing less.

Some just don't like to look "pasty"--some as I said go the extreme.

Even with in the "black" skin color--the tone varies greatly.

Just b/c a tanning salon is open--doesn't mean every white person is walking into it.

I don't feel this way nor have I ever tiggersmom2.

As I said I was only asking a simple question.

Another thing, you and I both know anyone of any race can have a superiority complex so don't think I'm saying it's only white people because that is definitely not the case.

I feel the same way about some black people who bleach their skin :confused3

Oh I was there back when all my friends were wearing size 5,6 and 7 shoe sizes while I was wearing a size 10.

I thought I was cursed with boat feet :cold:

Your right racism isn't just a white disease. I always say there is good and bad in all races.

Your, entitled to feel the way you want about this, because you are entitled to your own opinion.

It still doesn't change the fact that if things were different back then and everyone (all races) were treated EQUAL, there wouldn't be a need to have seperate associations.

I mean really it took YEARS for a woman of color to make on the cover of high fashion magazines where as now we don't have that problem.

If the shoe was on the other foot I wouldn't have a problem with it and would understand why it was necessary.

The fact remains that the past did happen. For years and years and years the government down to the smallest man has apologized and tried to make repairs to be assured that this never ever happens again. But the past can't stay in the past because it's always being thrown in peoples faces. It took YEARS for women of ANY color to have lots of the rights we have today. I look back on those times and celebrate where we're at, not wallow in what "used to be". No one should tell someone to get over it, especially if they actually lived it. But how many people today have lived through those time...some yes, but most of us have only reaped the rewards of the changes that have come from those. It is history. As long as we continue to let what "used to be" dictate our feelings and thoughts, we will never move forward, only sit stagnant and grow bitter.
And excuse me for saying it, but you have no idea what problems you would or wouldn't have it the "shoe were on the other foot". You've never worn that shoe. And truth be told...the shoe WAS on the other foot and that's where all this came from.

I'm 5'5"..I have size 10-11 feet.

Of course I do not like sharing shoes---so whether or not I had boat feet was no big deal. Though one day at school in 6th grade--the outfit I wore combined with my poor shoe choice....all I needed was a curly wig and a big red nose and I would have been all set for halloween. Someone with smaller feet--could have gotten away with the ensemble. But not me!

What about the indians? IMHO, white men treated indians far worse than blacks even through slavery. White men killed indians hundreds at a time including women and children and took away everything and to this day many live in poverty on land "given" to them by the white men who stole the land in the first place. Many feel safe on their reservations and do not leave. No one seems to care about their heritage yet you dont see or hear the indians complaining how wronged they were day in and day out.

No one can help being born to whatever skin color they have but it is up to that individual to decide what to do with oneself. You can blame others for your failures and be held back and never get anything accomplished or you can set goals and not let anyone (past or present) get in your way. It is all in the mindset and it is up to each and every unique individual to decide what you want out of life.

Im not lily white, my pigment will not allow it. I tan very easily. I'm not trying to be some one else because I have a tan.
