I just called to find out about exchanging into a DVC. I own a 2 bedroom unit at Orange Lake Orlando that often falls during Thanksgiving week.
I was shocked to find out that Orange Lake has put a restriction on their units that owners can not exchange into DVC. Apparently a bunch of the Orlando area resorts have put this restriction on their owners since they probably have gotten by for a long time in delivering an inferior product and don't want us to see this by visiting the resorts.
I can rent a week once they are in the system, but never exchange.
I am in contact with Orange Lake as I speak to find out more about this.
Cheers,
Brian
I understand what you are saying in principal, but I could buy a Gold Crown Red week in Myrtle Beach for a lot less than DVC and trade in with that so what's the difference?
Also just because I hope to trade in doesn't mean I can because not every exchange gets filled and it would be very easy to put a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 limitation on the trades instead of out right blocking them.
Cheers,
Brian
Interval has regional blocks, but I was not aware that RCI did also. If they do, this is the first I've heard of it. I suppose it is possible that DVC negotiated this, but it is also equally possible (and perhaps even more likely) that the RCI Guide you spoke with was mis-informed. In particular, the DVC resorts haven't even been assigned RCI IDs yet, so a lot may still be unknown to the Guides.Yes, there is a lockout on RCI around Disney.

Your guide may be assuming that RCI works like II did. Maybe, but I'd bet not. RCI typically doesn't do regional blocks, just as II typically doesn't do 1-in-N rules. Our DVC guide told us there is a lockout on non-Disney RCI resorts in the Orlando area.

As I said, though, it's entirely possible that DVC negotiated for such a restriction, and if they wanted one, I'm sure RCI would be willing to do it. Time will tell.
At its core, timeshare exchange is really just a way for developers to help market their units. It answers the "but what if I don't want to stay here every year" question. What's more, the real customers of the exchange companies are the developers, not the individual members, because developer affiliations drive revenue to the exchanges. So, it's generally not useful to try to apply logic or "what should happen" to the various exchange company rule quirks.I thought that they were there so that if you wanted to stay someplace other than your home resort you could try and exchange into something else. Maybe you like it and buy a unit there as well.
I don't much care either way, but this would not be the first time a Guide was wrong. As I said, we'll just have to see.I'm just reiterating what our DVC guide told us. If its really a concern for you then I'd call your guide and confirm the details.
Does anyone else feel the resorts are not as nice in RCI as they were with II?
