how was Jon Stewart as the host?

I did not see the Oscars at all, but I like Jon Stewart and I am curious about how he did as a host.

Was he funny? Boring? Something else?

I remember when they had David Letterman host and it was a disaster!

I think he could have been a whole lot better if he would have had some good writers . It seems like it was very forced and most of the jokes fell flat.

I only saw the last hour or so, and what I saw made me yawn.

On the news afterwards they said he did a good job, but I think they need to bring back Robin Williams. He keeps the censors on their toes!

I thought he was OK; part of the problem was that a lot of his appeal comes from making fun of the establishment, and the audience he was playing to WAS the establishment and didn't feel like laughing at themselves...

I don't understand why the host has to be so entertaining. Shouldn't the speeches be the entertainment? I wish they'd skip the stupid jokes and uncomfortable banter between celebs before announcing the nominees.

I thought he did a good job---or as well as he could've in this situation. It's difficult to explain, but I always get the feeling that Hollywood lives in its own little bubble & god forbid anyone try to pop it. Anyone trying to get them to look at the warts of the business would be looked down upon---and yet, that's very much what Jon Stewart does on his show on a daily basis.

I get the feeling that he ended up pretty restrained in what he wanted to say vs. what the producers of the show wanted & it showed. Overall though, I think he did pretty well considering what he had to work with.

I liked him. I think he did as well as to be expected and obviously had a lot of his Daily Show writers working with him on his stuff.

BUT

I adore Jon Stewart, The Daily Show is also one of my favorites.

I think he was better than Letterman, Woopie and Chris Rock.

IMO opinion is that I don't think much of "Hollywood" has a sense of humor about themselves let alone the world around them. People like George Clooney seem to even while having an opinion on issues.

I just wanted the audience to lighten up.

I thought he did a good job. He was funny, his jokes were thought out and clever, not just done for shock value. I generally like his style of humor though.

I am not a big fan of Steve Martin or Billy Crystal as hosts. I also didn't like Whoopi. I thought Chris Rock was ok, and I enjoyed Letterman. I think he did a good job, and didn't overshadow the show.

Actually, I thought the show was decent last night. A few laughs, brisk pace, little fluff and relatively short, succinct speeches. I didn't have to stay awake until after midnight.

He did "fine". The whole show was so boring compared to years past for me. It's just not as fun when you don't have some hair triggered celebs announcing awards. Even if I don't always agree with what they have to say I at least like to see the reactions to folks like Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon & her hottie Tim Robbins. I also like the host to take more risks. Letterman bombed but at least we all were able to laugh at how utterly bad his jokes were. "Uma - Oprah, Oprah - Uma" bad, bad, bad but funny

Did anyone else see that older lady trying to read her lines, I think it was Lauren something, what was going on there.

That was Lauren Bacall, and apparantly she need her glasses to see the prompter. She is in her 80's I believe, so you must excuse her and she is a legend.

I think he did fine, also. I don't remember laughing that much during an Oscar show except when Billy Crystal did it. The show was very well written, even if Jon was staring out into the audience like a deer in headlights for awhile~

I thought he was great!! Too bad he was in front of that audience though, as it looked like it hurt them to smile. We were cracking up, especially the Scientology joke!!

It will look like he did a bad job because of audience reaction, but that's because they can't handle a little good natured teasing. Too bad.

The audience seemed unusually stiff and dull for some reason. You could even see that when the cameras panned them. Most seem to have strained smiles on their faces and appeared to wish that they could be somewhere else. The only one I ever saw really laughing was Jack Nicholson but he appears to enjoy these award shows.

That said, I thought that Jon Stewart did fine. His style of humor is rather deadpan and ironic, and his audience has to be in the right mindset. He was a little restrained but his writers were probably trying to be somewhat nice which is a shame if true.

My favorite past host is Billy Crystal primarily because I always get the feeling that he really doesn't care if he's nice or not.

I did see Jamie Foxx just crack up when Jon Stewart was talking about remakes. He named off King Kong, War of the World, and then Walk the Line...there was a pause and he said "yeah, "Walk the Line" is just "Ray" with white people."

I thought he was "himself" which, to me, is very funny. It just didn't seem to fly with that audience, thought, which was strange.

I was LMAO at the segment put together to make the old cowboy movies look not-so-macho.

My favorite joke was when he made the crack about pirated movies -- don't pirate the movies because then these people will be POOR! Or something like that. Very funny.

I thought he was really funny! It made me laugh even more that the audience was not enjoying it (twisted I know)
