how was Jon Stewart as the host?

I thought he was really funny! It made me laugh even more that the audience was not enjoying it (twisted I know) :teeth:

Same here. :thumbsup2

These celebs need to get over themselves. Some of them seem a little uptight.

I'd like to see Kathy Griffin host one year...that would be amusing for sure! :cool1:

I thought he was great!! Too bad he was in front of that audience though, as it looked like it hurt them to smile. We were cracking up, especially the Scientology joke!!

It will look like he did a bad job because of audience reaction, but that's because they can't handle a little good natured teasing. Too bad.

My take as well. I thought Jon Stewart's humor was intelligent and understated, while the audience acted like they all had a dry corn cob up their butts. i just about fell off the couch laughing when they showed that montage of "films with a cause" and he quipped,"And they were never a problem again." :lmao:

George Clooney forgot to pack his sense of humor entirely. And who's the guy who got up and kissed him? You see him in a lot of photos with Clooney.
I think in general Hollywood takes themselves way too seriously. As IF any of them are real experts on political science or global warming :rolleyes1 They're actors, for heaven's sake! They have as much right to their opinions as anyone, but that doesn't mean they actually know more than we do.

I just saw on MSNBC that he was getting slammed by critics, however they did an online poll and 72 % said he did a good job. So, it just goes to show how out of touch the "industry" is with the general public.

My favorite joke was when he made the crack about pirated movies -- don't pirate the movies because then these people will be POOR! Or something like that. Very funny.
I loved the Scientology joke... I wish Tom Cruise would have been there!!!

What was his scientology joke?? I'm bummed I missed it!!

I thought Jon and the whole show was boring.

Attention! Billy Crystal or Steve Martin please do it next year!

George Clooney in the past year has gotten more political, and though I stilll like him he's not as easy going as he was.

What do you mean George wasn't funny? He seemed witty at the beginning of his acceptance speech, and when Jon made that joke about him he laughed along with everyone else, then did a funny "huh? that was about me!" look.

Steve Martin would be fun. But who knows? This crowd might not even like him.

I think he did well within the feel of the show. This year was so serious and boring. EVEN THE GOWNS WERE BORING!

I think the host can only be as funny as people allowed them to be.

I did like Steve Martin and I loved BillyCrystal the best, but Jon was better than David Letterman.

Even when the camera was on the crowd, it seemed tense.

George Clooney was the only one who really had fun with his speech. The rest were boring.

I always like speeches like Jack Pallance(the push ups were neat), Julia Roberts (I love it up here) and Cuba Godding Jr. jumping up and down.

Last year we had Jamie Foxx win for Ray and the feeling in the room was great.

How about this one...
"I have to say it is a little shocking to see all these big names here, these huge stars. The Oscars is really I guess the one night of the year when you can see all your favorite stars without having to donate any money to the Democratic Party. And it's exciting for the stars as well because it's the first time many of you have ever voted for a winner." — Oscar host Jon Stewart during the opening monologue.

Us Canadians got a good laugh from it...

and this one:
"I do have some sad news to report. Bjork couldn't be here tonight. She was trying on her Oscar dress and Dick Cheney shot her." — Jon Stewart. :lmao:

I think they should give everyone in the audience a couple of drinks because they all seemed too tense. :drinking1 :drinking1

I think that is why the Golden Globes tend to be more fun, they feed them and give them alcohol.

I enjoyed him. Admittedly I am a big fan of his and of the Daily Show. Hollywood needs too quit taking itself so seriously. For goodness sakes they are making movies, not saving the world.

I got to thinking about it after reading some of the articles today.

Part of the problem might be Hollywood's apathy. There's too many award shows now. Philip Seymour Hoffman, for example, won 17 awards for that role alone. 17! Yeah, ok, the Oscar is the big kahuna, but come on. I'd be bored silly if I had to sit through ceremony after ceremony--I can only imagine what it must be like.

Maybe if the Oscars went back to being the one important award of the year instead of one of many, perhaps Hollywood (and we) could get excited about all of this again.

The Scientology joke was.....they were just coming back from commerical break and the view thinks that Jon has missed his cue because he is addressing the audience and we see him mid sentence saying just how great this Scientology thing really is, then he looks at the camera, sees it on and 'pretends" to be all nervous and then goes back on script.

I thought he was funny. Not sure if his audience did but I didn't care. I tuned in to watch him, not them!! :teeth:

I thought he was fantastic! However the rest of the show was just blah. I was really irritated with the cheesy underscore music they played while people were giving their acceptance speeches. Very annoying!

DH and I thought he was funny and kept wondering why the audience was so serious. They weren't giving him much, but after awhile, it was like they finally started to "get it" and laughed a bit more.

The 3 6 guys were funny when they won. They were the most excited winners of the evening. I love George Clooney, and I thought his acceptance speech was great even though I don't agree with his politics. He's entitled to his views though, and he's just so darn cool and cute.

Overall, Jon was great, just not well-received by the rather dull crowd.

I don't watch the Daily Show, but I thought Jon was absolutely hilarious last night! I lost it during the Bjork/Cheney joke! I don't know if that was the best audience for him and his style, but I enjoyed him.
