We just passes ROFR on a BLT 600 contract with a Dec use year. I actually forgot the contract has 36 2012 points since I considered them practically unusable. Assuming it will take about another month until we go through closing and are in the Disney system, that brings us to mid to late August. The points expire on Nov 30. Is there anyway to unload them in such a short time?

We do happen to have a cash room reservation at BLT for 4 nights in Oct but I cannot see how we could integrate the points into that trip at such a late date. Besides, i am pretty sure you cannot combine a cash and point rez, right?

I bought a VGC August UY contract with 36 points about to expire and closed in May. We couldn't use the points and I was going to let them expire but just for the heck of it I listed them with David's for rental not expecting them to rent. Well David's managed to find someone to rent 32 of them so I ended up getting close to $400 dollars for points I was expecting to expire.

You can book a points stay in October and link it to your cash stay if both are for the same room type you might not even have to change room. If there Is availability that might be a good plan.

Minniesgal,
Thank you for the very helpful replies! Both sound like good options. I thought David's only will accept a minimum of 85 points.

Theoretically true but I asked them if they would take mine and they asked if they could borrow some from the following year to make it a few more and I said yes but in the end the booking they found didn't need to borrow. It was just very lucky. Now they may have agreed to mine as they are VGC points and may be like hens teeth on the rental market but the rented them for AKV so I'm not sure that had anything to do with it. You can only try your luck and that's what we did fully thinking we had no chance but as it turned out luck was with us.

If they are truly 2012 points the seller would have until July 31st to bank them since you are still in your 2012 UY. You could try to ask the broker to ask the seller to bank them. Not sure if it can be done this far into the sale process/if Disney would care. It would probably have to be done before the title company sends out the contracts.

I have also read where other posters add on a cash day before/after their stay. I would hope the reservations could be linked so you could stay in the same room. I have heard of people needing to get a new room key though. Good luck. I have 51 points from my contract that will most likely expire before we close and I get my membership #. It's so sad to see them go to waste :(

Okay, so I have 4 nights booked at BLT in a 1bed lake view for Oct through the main Disney reservations (am still not a DVC member quite yet...just passed ROFR and waiting to close). My ideal plan would be to modify that reservation for only 3 nights and then use the extra points to pay for the last night, if available. Wouldn't I have to change rooms, though since the first three nights would be through CRO and the last night through DVC?

It's going to be hard to get BLT for October now. You might be able to snag a stray night if you are lucky but it's pretty much soldout.

I agree with DebbieB October is an extremely busy time for DVC. I am wait listed for a BLT, when I booked a few months ago only Saratoga was available... I have rented through David's and try are wonderful. You should give them a call and discuss your situation. You may have to borrow from the next year to make a reservation though.
You could also try and sell them on the boards or transfer them to someone.
I have found there is a huge demand for the points and with some small effort you should be able to sell them.

This might not be an option, but does member services ever work with people in situations like this waiting to close and allow the new member to bank the points? It never hurts to ask?

Sorry, I should have said the points are in holding and are not bankable.

Well for points in holding you couldn't book anything until 60 days or less out so that complicates it a little more. Well maybe not if you don't close until late August anyway.

Is this a 600 pt ( one contract ) or a mix of contracts?:)

Maybe they aren't in holding. I just know that they could not be banked. I asked when we were making the offer. Maybe they were borrowed points. I am just pretty sure they need to be used by Nov 30. In my mind, when making our offer, etc. I basically did not even take these points into account, as I considered them nearly useless.

We ended up with a handful of points when we bought a resale....we had just returned from another vacay and only had 6 weeks to use them. Called the Time Share Store and got them rented for us. A somewhat local couple that just wanted a long weekend. We didn't make a killing.....didn't want to, as we were surprised to find the points in our "bank". Just didn't have time to use them. A win-Win situaton. And it was easy to do.

Here comes a silly question... What/Who is David's? Is this a company members can rent points through? I tried search without luck...

Thanks in advance for the info! ::MickeyMo
