How to turn your WDW resort room into a KITCHEN?

JMHO, but I do enough cooking/cleaning/laundry while at home and don't want to do it while on vacation! LOL! That being said, we had our first DVC stay this past Feb, and we got lots of use from the microwave and toaster in the kitchenette for breakfasts and snacks.

I don't think there's anything wrong with families wanting to save some $$ by cooking/eating their own food....goodness knows it can get pretty pricey to eat out every day for a week or more. We are a family of 5, but two of the kids eat like adults and we can drop quite a bundle on food during our vacations. But IF I were planning to do any cooking while staying in the WDW resorts (or any place for that matter), I really think it would be wise to stay in a place with the proper facilities to do so.

I fell that if you want to cook, stay in a resort that has a kitchen. That's what we're doing. I couldn't imagine having anything but some snack food in a regular hotel room.

My view too...Sweet Maxine Cheesey Ohannah was the best thing I have seen in a while. She was staying in an area that was set up for cooking (as the DVC resorts are as well). I do the summer thing at the Cape Cod, and it is no fun (for me:( ). So when I go to Disney, out side of juice boxes, tonic water, crackers, ceral, trail mixes, breakfast bars, it is NO ...I would like to eat out, Thank you:p

And while I am no expert on eletricity, the arguement on plugging in a blender which has a very small motor, (vs. a fridge which has a much larger motor, which DIsney can do) as a potential fire hazard don't make sense to me.....and yes:p I have burned down my kitchen ....Twice:p

IMHO if Disney thought there was any serious problem, it would be published, posted, and measures would be taken to ensure a guests saftey. ::MinnieMo

Gee, I barely cook at home...why would I start while on vacation in a resort filled with fabulous chefs from all over! If I had small children and needed to save money or needed lots of PB & J sandwiches I'd probably just stay in one of the villas or condos equipped for cooking...as it is So many restaurants, so little time!

this is a real hot button topic on the budget boards..... do a search sometime and see what comes up!

saying it's ok to bring a blender for drinks, a coffee pot for morning coffee, or a curling iron - and then saying it's NOT ok to bring a microwave, griddle or toaster seems kind of hypocritical to me. They are ALL appliances.

If YOU think a coffeepot is ok, someone else may think a microwave is ok. You can't condone it because it's the one item YOU think is right.

Personally, I ALWAYS get a room with a kitchenette, and with this stay we rented a home with a full kitchen. It's not that I'm going to cook everyday - because I'm not, it's for the convenience and to save money. Spending $150 a day for food (as one poster noted) is simply out of the question for me. I think it's great that they can do that, but I CAN'T. I simply can't afford it.

I think that the majority of the people who do this sort of thing is probably families trying to provide their children with a magical vacation. Thay HAVE to cut costs or they'll never get to go. It's just a fact. While most of you probably don't agree with that, it's just the way it is. It doesn't make it right though but I have to be honest - If I were a parent and had saved for my vacation for a loooong time and then an emergency happened at home (where extra money had to be spent) and then my vacation hinged on my food bill - it would be tempting to take a small microwave (some are small enough to be packed in luggage bags now) instead of paying $$ to upgrade to a room with a kitchenette. Some people just CAN'T afford it, and yes, for some, their vacation comes down to having a $100 or less to be flexible with (food, etc). With the HIGH costs of Disney I would much rather my next door neighbor in my hotel brought a microwave and know that another child got to experience Disney than to know they didnt.

Some of you are thinking - if their budget is THAT tight, why even go? It's those parents who DO have a budget that find creative ways to go that I admire the most.

And so help me - If I EVER stayed in a place where my neighbor, while holding his cup of coffee (fresh from his own pot), said something to me about my toaster - I'd make sure he was wearing that coffee!

As I said, I don't recommend this and have personally never had to do it - but I HAVE had to scrimp and save on vacations - to the point of even doing without things for myself - but it was all in the name of my kids. I wan't it to be the best experience it can be for them. They are not gonna notice a toaster in the room - or even why it's there - but they WILL notice that 'extra' photo, t-shirt, or whatever that they get at the MK because I was able to save money.

So unless we can all agree that all curling irons, hair dryers, microwaves, coffee pots, griddles, toasters, etc can be left behind - then none of us really have any room to talk here.

If it were REALLY a problem, housekeeping would make sure something was done about it. So in the meantime, don't worry about what your neighbor has in their room and just enjoy your vacation!

And as far as sanitary conditions go - I would worry about the 1000's of people who have slept on my bed before me than I would about a crumb in the room. Although sheets are changed, bedspreads are not (they are cleaned after every 'so many' stays). Trust me, I KNOW on that one. Ever think about the bodily fluids left on your bedspread by the people there before you? When you finally reach your room you stretch out on your bed to relax - laying in God knows what. You dont know the ppl there before you - they may not be as clean as you. Gross thought, but thats how it goes. And you are worried about a toaster????

do you know how many times we have had the fire alarms go off from the toasters at work and the fire dept comes running??? Not to mention the hot topic on the news lately regarding electrical fires from microwaves. I have no problem with a cooler. the drinks are expensive for sure. But you in a hotel room not a house. there are plenty of places to stay on disney property that provide the appliances needed to cook on if you so wish. too many fire hazzards othewise. very scary this topic- I had no idea. Makes me feel quite unsafe.

Being the child and not the parent, I would just hate for my mom to have to cook while on vacation...

And we would never go on vacation if we were having to watch our money so much that we had to bring a microwave and fridge for food. We are sure to save up enough so that we can eat away from the room.

Not saying we are going to go to Medevil Times and Cirque every night to eat but we will be able to grab quick bites at TUbbi's Buffeteria (in the Swan/Dolphin) and at the parks.

Everyone also needs to remember these are just opinions and I love reading these to find out how other people spend their time on vacation. If everyone did the same exact thing, this would be a very boring place.

But I digress here, and have to say, if you don't want to cook on vacation, fine. Just don't pounce on everyone that does

No one cares if you cook on vacation. If it is in a resort that is equipped for it. Like the cabins where you stayed. The problem is when people try to cook in regular resort rooms in the crockpots, electric frying pans, microwaves and toasters that they bring in themselves.

there are still ways to have a magical vacation even on a tight budget without bringing the kitchen into the hotel room. I can remember many trips growing up on vacation with my grandparents and we would eat some killer sandwiches, pringles, dips, fruit, salads without using anything we needed to plug in.

I have heard some things I just cannot believe and really dont sit well with me. using the iron to grill cheese and hotdogs is one of the latest.

Once again, I feel that this particular topic has been exhausted and if this thread is left open, will only deteriorate into nastiness.

So this thread is being closed.
