How to turn your WDW resort room into a KITCHEN?

It just amazes me what some people do. :earseek:
We've never cooked anything in our room before and never intend to. ::yes::

I'm trying to picture just how one accomplishes this in a resort room with 2 queen beds.........where does the griddle go? How do you get it clean afterward? Bathtub?? LOL:teeth:

Does Disney allow bringing in kitchen appliances? If not, it should be reported by housecleaning and people should not do it period. You don't have the right to jeopardize the rest of us. Stay someplace where you can have a kitchen. This is totally unnecessary. We are now DVC members and have a kitchen when we stay at the DVC properties. We have used the toaster coffeepot and refrigerator. We also stay in the Disney resorts and wouldn't think about bringing in appliances. Someone on a different thread said they bring in a refrigerator!!!!!!!!!!!!!I know a woman who has brought a hotpot to cook soup for lunch everyday instead of going out( to save money even though they don't need to ) Ridiculous!

No cooking for me even when at my DVC home. It is called VACATION:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I used to work at the front desk at one of the Disney hotels, and people would bring in actual microwaves!!! The first time I saw it I was shocked! Can you imagine what the room must have smelled like?!?!?!

Mostly it happened when we had certain groups in house that brought families with them- mainly "Scam-way" type groups or Amway to everyone else.

It seemed they were sooo overcharged by the "Scam-way" people that the only way they could afford to eat while at their "reunion" was to cook for themselves. Very sad!

Anyway, I've seen refrigerators, microwaves, hot plates, full sized Christmas trees! Too much! But believe me it does happen!

I don't go to Disney to cook that's for sure, but I don't understand the huge outcry over people who bring appliances. Most hotels have coffee makers (which are appliances) and no one thinks twice about making coffee in the room. How is a toaster or microwave any different. And why would they be more of a fire hazard than the coffee makers. I say to each his own!! Maybe they are on a REALLY tight budget but want the Disney memories to carry them through the tough time to come. Or maybe they have severe food allergies and don't want to draw attention in the resturants. Or maybe a hunderd other reasons. What's the big deal??

Microwaves probably draw a much bigger current than a coffee maker, especially when it initially turns on, which could be a fire hazard. I'm not sure about toasters. I agree with you, though, assuming that something is not a fire hazard, either from the outlet directly or circulation issues with the appliance. I try not to judge others and if eating in the room makes a family able to afford a trip to WDW, then so be it.

I thought Vacation meant getting away from it all...

Speaking from experience in living in a dorm that was formally a hotel, we were not allowed microwaves due to a fire hazard. If the hotel room doesn't come with one, chances are you won't need one.

I can understand coolers. We bring one to every hotel we drive to simply becaause I don't want to pay $2.50 for a can of coke in the hotel vending machine and ice is usually free. (I have stayed at a couple of hotels where they charge you a quarter for ice.)

As for me, I plan on not bringing a thing. I have been saving so I could eat some good food.

I don't at all see what's wrong wiith a fridge in the room. Disney provides them for their guests (for $10/day).

I rented one from A Baby's Best Friend. It was much cheaper than Disney's rates and this way, I can save leftovers from those HUGE dinner portions Disney gives you, and have a good lunch the next day.

Renting a fridge for cold drinks I can see, but that's where I draw the line. We had to change rooms a few years ago because of a really strong garlic odor! I don't cook on vacation! We did pop some popcorn at the food court and ate it in the room while watching TV.

Cook on vacation, no way, I don't do laundry just got have fun, eat out and leave all the work to others. I guess if I had a large family (kids) I would rent a home away from home with a kitchenette but juts me and my son go so I pamper myself.:D I'm thinking back when I was a kid and my parents always took us to the cape for 2 weeks, they rented a cotage, mom brought pots pans and sheets and things from home and as I kid I thought that was great, I look back now and thonk of all the work my mom did for us kids to have a vaction, she was never on one, she did everything like at home plus more, packing unpacking holy moses I am tired just thinking of it. :D

Gosh, I guess I must be in the minority here. I took a whole box full of stuff with me to the Fort Wilderness cabins in June. I had enough stuff in my box for our luau party, a pirate's theme night (with candy for the treasure chest cake), and a Mexican theme night. I also lugged my Mickey waffler with me.

BTW, we had a blast! We had quite a few interested people stopping by our cabin the night of our luau party. They were wanting to be included in on the fun.

But I digress here, and have to say, if you don't want to cook on vacation, fine. Just don't pounce on everyone that does. And the cabins are a great place to stay for cooking (if you'll be doing it, that is). We used our grill outside the cabin, and noticed that some others were doing the same thing. Imagine!!

What's the big deal??

The smell, the fire hazard, sanitary condition.

People choose smoking rooms because they want to smoke. To me this is no different with the in room cooking. If you must cook, find a room that has the proper facilities for it. Most people don't want their future hotel rooms to smell like a diner.
If you don't cook in your bedroom at home, why would you do it on vacation?

Yikes...This is hysterical! It reminds me of the time my room mate and I set the building wide fire alarm off in college. We we using a toaster in our dorm room and just the heat of it set the alarm off. Needless to say, we never used that thing again!

Also, I now live in a two family home and the smell of cooking food travels and though it smell great in your place...it is absolutely nasty to smell other peoples food. Well, except bacon...that smells great...lol

...The space difference between a dvc studio and a regular hotel room is not that much. The only difference is as far as kitchen appliances being plugged in is maybe they have different types of outlets in the studios to accomodate the more energy using appliances?

Plus the DVC units have fire extinguishers in each room.

Nope, Nada, No way, Just ain't gonna happen........I for one plan to eat my way through Disney. The only thing I want to do is pick up a fork!!! I've waited for this too long and with all the menus and pricing info available we have been able to pick out where and budget for what we want. Now don't get me wrong, of course we'll have H2o, granola, snacks, etc, (we are driving) but I'm on VaCa and this year Mom's not cooking (last year cabin in North Carolina, how I got stuck with cooking all those fish, I will never know). Now I'm hungry!

I can see the importance of a blender. Without it, how can I make a proper margarita, daquiri, or mudslides? ::yes::

whereas I am bringing a cooler, and let it be known on regular hotel visits, I love microwaves, and yet I hate when anyone else burns microwave popcorn, and

in which we now live in a time where microwaves are only $35

I wonder why, oh, no never mind...

I get it...

*heavy sigh!!

why some people even mail boxes of food to the resort ahead of time to "save money" but what about the cost to ship???? That never made sense to me.

I think sometimes people just get so wrapped up in the plan to save money that they don't think it through. Are they really saving enough to make it worth the effort.

I've even heard of people going to WalMart in Orlando and buying microwaves just for the stay - then going off and leaving it when they check out as they don't have room for them on return trip home!

Good Grief!!! Instead of shopping at WalMart and cooking in my room, I'd rather be spending my time enjoying Disney.

Just my other 2 cents........When we went to the mountains, of course we brought all kinds of stuff too. But we were in a cabin also. I think the point here is just regular rooms. Frig's, yes. Anything else, I agree to draw the line. Like someone else stated, (and you did) if your going to cook stay in the appropriate place.

See...when I think of the Wilderness Cabins I do think of camping "sort-of" and with camping you do need to bring your own food. But when I think of staying at a Hotel, I think of people who are paid to cook and clean for you...with your money no less. Just an opinion. But then again, its just me and my mom going this time and there is no way I would make her cook after she paid for me to go.

PS...have brought a blender with me to make pina colodas...much cheaper and lots of fun by the pool. Be sure to take plastic cups, if you get them in the room they are usually way to small! lol

We always stay in condos, so we have a full kitchen. I would hate to eat out two or three times a day for several reasons. With four kids (two practically adults) we would have to take half as many vacations just to pay those huge restaurant bills. We also tend to eat more in restaurants because you don't want to waste food or lug home leftovers. If we make our own food, we are more realistic about portions. Also, having the smaller children sit and wait for the meal to be served in a restaurant can be an ordeal, particularly if they're tired. I'd much rather let them start their baths or watch a bit of TV while the food is being prepared. It's also easier to deal with our picky eaters when we make our own menus. We can fix simple things about as quickly as the restaurant can get it on the table. We go for easy stuff and things that can be reheated for later meals. Sometimes we even use frozen food, such as the family size Stouffers Lasagna. Add a loaf of good bread and a salad and my family is content.

And as for laundry, nothing would make me sadder than to get home from a trip and have a week's worth of dirty clothes to tackle. It's just not that big a deal to throw a load of socks and underwear in the washer while you're relaxing around the resort. We can pack fewer clothes that way. On our last trip, after 16 days, we had one small bag of dirty clothes when we got home.

Everyone should do what makes them happy, but this works for us.
