In Sept we are driving down to Disney and this will be our 3rd trip driving. All of the previous times we have driving through I95 and we didnt hit much traffic but the drive was boring and just long. While reading the forums I find out there is an inland route through I81 which is more scenic and relaxing. I will be helping out with the drive and I am kind of looking forward to a less hectic drive. Now I have no clue where we can take route 81 from Central NJ. We live right off exit 91 of the Parkway if anyone from this area have an idea how to get this alternate route. I have been trying to use google maps but it only gives me directions through I 95. thanks for any info.

i78 is the best way if you are close to i78. you can also come across i80 if your closer to i80.
i78 will take you into i81. I live about 15 min. from the pa, nj i78 stateline.

I have family in Brick right there with you and I live in VA right off I-81. I always take 195 to the Jersey Turnpike/PA Turnpike to the Carlisle Exit which will put you right on 81 south!! I live just 4 exits into VA and I travel to see family in Brick all the time. I can tell you its exactly 4 hours from Catching 195 off the parkway till you reach the VA state line on I-81. Hope this helps.

We are also leaving Sept 13 but I doubt I can make DH get up to leave at 1 am. I would love to leave as early as possible but he is not giving. We end up settling on leaving at 4am.

:thumbsup2 well if you decided to take the "inland" way, have a safe trip and if you happen to see a silver 2012 Mercedes benz glk350 with a dvc member decal on the back window, blow the horn and wave. :thumbsup2

I-81 has a lot of tractor trailer traffic from I-70 to at least Blacksburg, VA and can get busy. You come across an accident and you are really screwed. But if you don't mind the extra time it takes to go that much farther west...

Our daughter goes to Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) and we drive from Baltimore to there. I-495 to I-66 to I-81 is the fastest way (for us) if you miss rush hour in DC. But for you it looks like I-78 is the way to go. But for me, the sometimes heavy traffic does not make it relaxing. But you will miss DC rush hour which is a serious advantage.

Just curious, assuming perfect traffic around DC what is the difference in travel time between 95 vs 81?

We always take that route from New York and while it is about 90 miles further, it is a way more relaxing and scenic route. I highly recommend it. Not having to deal with Washington, Baltimore and Richmond is awesome, just lots of farmland, cows and beautiful valleys. :)

I live off of I 81 in West Virginia and while I agree, I 81 is scenic and less hectic than i95, there is a lot of semi traffic. We also have construction going in here and almost every week, we have a serious accident (someone dies or needs to go to hospital). It is so bad, that the big wigs from charleston came out to figure out what to do to stop these accidents.....so they put more state trooper permanately on that section to slow people down. So just be careful and when you see the construction, slow down and keep eyes vigilant.:)

how would you get to Hershey Park from your area? I81 is not that far from Hershey or Lancaster Pa areas.
