How to secure 1 point?

I believe they could also book that as you suggest and then cancel it so the points are just sitting there.

The OTUP do not necessarily show up in your account, so I don't think that will help. I learned that the hard way just a few weeks ago.

When I cancelled a reservation that used OTUP, they did NOT appear in my account so I could not book the reservation I wanted. I had to call MS. Fortunately in my case, the reservation I wanted was still available and MS had no problem seeing the released OTUP.

Thus, the OP will almost certainly have to call MS to use the OTUP - I suspect they work just as transferred points work. Those only show in your account if the use year and hoe resort match what you already have. Chances of that happening for OTUP are not very good, IMO.

DaleFan - let us know how it works out. :)

So OTUP do not automatically have the same UY and home resort? Then some OTUP would be more beneficial than others?

Hello! I am looking for some advice. I am wanting to waitlist 1 night at The Grand Californian June 12. I currently have 19 points available from my Oct 2016 use year. The night would be 20 points. I can't borrow from 2017. When this all came about I was going to buy the point from member services. Until I remembered I have to actually be making the reservation. So is there any way to get that 1 point to create a waitlist, or am I just going to have to stalk the website, hope something pops up, and member services is open? Thank you!!
I'd borrow, it doesn't make sense to me to go through all of these gyrations to save a points for the next year.

So you don't think the suggestion you gave earlier in the thread to do this will work? :goodvibes Since they would be waitlisting and the only points would be their existing plus the OTU point then it likely should since a CM has to touch the reservation to fill it. The concern would be that they wouldn't find the OTU point but I have had them call me when they've been uncertain. I'm not certain how prominent the OTU point shows in the account for them.

Members are only allowed a single transfer, either in or out, not both, each year. The likelyhood that someone would be willing to go through the trouble and use up their one chance for a single point is very, very slim. Basically, you're looking for someone who has some points stranded and can't use them, and they'd probably want you to take them all. Transfers are usually a "take all I have left" transaction.
If you have 2 contracts, you can tranfer from one to the other, correct? (That is two transfers, I am assuming you meant one per account or per contract???)

I was trying to convey that cancelling the reservation made with the OTUP would not allow the OP to use that point to book online. To use it, MS would have to book. So by cancelling, I don't think it would give the OP any advantage for snagging the desired night should he/she notice it in inventory. I also thought if the waitlist matched, it would be easier for MS to know what to do - but that's not necessarily true, depending on the experience of the CM. I've had a few new ones, lately, LOL. :goodvibes

Trip would be in the 2015 use year, can't borrow more. They have 19 to borrow, need 20.

Thank you for all the new information! I haven't checked in for a while. I ended up doing.... nothing :) I'm not 100% sure I'm going. If we end up going I will just pay cash for a room. I do feel silly though because I didn't understand how transferring worked and I messaged someone on the rent/trade board and asked if I could rent 1 point from them . Oops I really thought I could just rent 1 point! Thank you all for helping me figure out how that worked. So I will just sit on my 19 points from my Oct 2016 Use Year. I'm sure I will need them for something else down the road!

I'm sure this was new information to more posters than just you. Thanks for asking! :)
