I would love to learn how to rent points next year for a vacation to save money I would still like to stay at POR but rent points to save money is this possible?

While you can rent points to stay at POR, POR is not a DVC resort. Likely for POR it would be cheaper to just pay cash through Disney, as trading out of the DVC system takes more points than staying at a DVC resort and there is a $95 trade out fee for non-DVC locations.

To give you a specific example, POR on a weeknight in January, std view, is 19 points per night. This would probably cost you between $228 and $285 per night (using a range of $12-15 per point). PLUS $95. And no housekeeping.

The same room is available direct through Disney, without any discount at all for $182 per night. With housekeeping. And a much more flexible cancellation policy.

Renting points doesn't make sense for non DVC options.

Thank you so only if staying at the resorts designed for dvc would be a worth renting points.

That's correct. :) DVC is a timeshare, and if you rent points, you'll be staying at resorts that are part of the DVC system. At WDW, that's OKW, SSR, AKV, VWL, VGF, BLT, BWV and BCV.

And you aren't renting points, you are renting a reservation made with the owners points.

If you don't own the points, they are worthless to you. You pay a member to make a reservation for you and they use their points to make it. Not much different than paying Disney for a reservation. Except the rules are different. DVC members have points that expire, points that can only be used in certain ways. Disney can book you anything that is available and you have the money to pay them.

renting points from a DVC member is fairly easy and will save you a lot of money. I have no idea what people are talking about related to this $95 fee, I assume this is not renting from a DVC member directly. You can go to the other location on this site under DVC for rental and find an owner that is willing to rent their points and you contact them with the date you want to travel and the type or resort and they can look up what is available for rental. They will make the reservation in your name and you are off. You can look up the point chart on your own to see the number of points you need for the specific resort and room and time of the year and then you will buy points for betwen $10 to $14 a point. IF you want more detail, email me and I can give you more info.

The $95 fee is for reservations outside of DVC (except Disneyland & campground sites). The original poster mentioned POR. If a member makes a reservation for POR, there's a $95 fee paid to DVC. If you make a change, you have to pay $95 again. Same with cruises.

From OP:

OP is trying to go to Port Orleans Resort (POR) not a DVC resort.
POR is part of the Disney Collection of resorts, which is all Deluxe (Poly(yet), YC) and Moderate (POR, CBR, CSR) at WDW that do not have a DVC attached property. For a DVC member to use his/her points at one of these resorts requires a transfer fee of $95.00, that is non-refundable or non-transferable. If a change is made to the reseravation once booked another $95.00 fee would have to be paid.

You can look up the point chart on your own to see the number of points you need for the specific resort and room and time of the year and then you will buy points for betwen $10 to $14 a point.

This is not accurate. To the OP, you are not buying points. There is a distinct difference between buying points and renting a reservation. You are not buying points and you are not renting points. As Bill previously stated you are renting a reservation from a DVC owner. You can rent this reservation directly through an owner, or you can go through a service that acts as a middle man between you and the owner.

If you decide to rent a DVC reservation directly through an owner, please make sure that the owner is educated in the way DVC works. I would recommend going through a place like David's.

One more thing. If the person selling you the reservation says there is a $95 fee for a DVC resort, tell them "no" and walk away. They are reselling an RCI reservation which is not allowed.

As to how to go about rentng a DVC resort from an owner, you can go to the DVC Rent/Trade board on this site, for which you need to be signed into the site to see the link to it, and contact one of the owners that list there, or you can go through a rental broker, like David's who is one of the sponsors of this site, see http://www.dvcrequest.com.
