How to pick home resort?

Thanks, Granny, for the checklist. This will come in handy. I like to try and figure out all the pros/cons before making a decision. Although, like someone else said, I usually trade in the results for what I want them to be:)

If you do that, then basically you've prioritized without knowing it! :thumbsup2

I have to be honest...if the layout of OKW villas is appealing there won't be anything else for DVC at WDW that compares sizewise (excluding AKV because we don't know what those rooms look like).

Good luck in your decision! :)

For us, a key factor is a car. Old Key West and Saratoga Springs are car friendly. The other resorts are not.

I'd have to respectfully disagree, though we are talking semantics when we say "car friendly".

I think VWL/BWV/BCV are very car friendly because they have free valet parking. To me, that's every bit as "car friendly" as parking outside our villa.

I think this is a good point where likes and dislikes can be so subjective. In this case, John and I look at the same situation and draw two different conclusions. Neither of us is right or wrong as we are merely expressing opinions.

That's why the list of what's important is really key. It doesn't matter what is important to me, it's what is important to each prospective buyer. :)

I agree with Chuck S. I think the biggest factor in deciding between the DVC resorts, is the length of contract. All the DVC resorts are nice to begin with so its not as if you are deciding between a 3 star hotel and a 5 star resort .

And its not as if you will never have the opportunity to stay at all of them (yes, it may be be difficult to reserve the ideal reservation but not impossible over the course of next 47 years - so regardless of which resort you pick as your home, you will still be able to try the others out - my home is SSR, where I stayed last year and this year I am staying at Beach Club).
I say go for the extra years and enjoy !!

Each resort has its own style and theme. And each has its positives and negatives.

One thing to consider is contract length, Saratoga Springs will expire in 2054, and AKV in 2057. All other current resorts expire in 2042. Will you or your children want a longer contract to enjoy WDW in the future.

That's taking "car friendly" to a whole other perspective. The idea of "car friendly" is that you can easily get to your car to grab something you left behind. Valet parking doesn't make this possible. It also costs extra since you end up tipping every time you do something with your car.

That's why these sorts of things are really subjective. If you fly and rent a car so maybe you can do Universal or run out to Boma or something, you aren't going out to your car to get stuff - its all in suitcases and carryons that the bellman takes up for you - valet may be more convienent - or it may just make you feel more "special" - and tipping a few bucks is a negliable cost. If you spent two days in the car driving with kids, you are going to have a car full of junk, and running out to find the stuffed bear is going to be important - convienent to your door parking is such a better plan in those circumstances.

Someone can say all they want that the extra years at SSR are "really important" but they have negative value for me. I'm not going to be going to Disney that long - I'm too old. And I don't believe in passing along "inheritance with strings" like a timeshare to my kids. They want to invest in a timeshare when they are adults, that's their decision. Twelve extra years means my executor is that much more likely to have to deal with selling it.

How about something "everyone" agrees on - SAB is the best pool. But I don't like it. Its too hard to watch your kids there. In another few years my kids will be independant teenagers, and maybe then....but for now, SAB is more the stuff of nightmares. I can appreciate why so many people like SAB, its a really cool pool - it just isn't for me.

There are some objective things - OKW two bedrooms are much bigger and their points are lower than anyplace else. Yet ranking those objective things is, in itself, a subjective process. The bigger rooms are sure nice, but so is walking back from Illuminations.

Then maybe this will help:

1) Use Legos to build cute little replicas of Walt Disney World parks, resorts and landmarks.

2) Place them on the ground in approximate scale to each other. Use an area about 20 feet square.

3) Fence it all off and add one well-fed cow.

5) Wait about an hour and then clean off your new home resort.
