Do a "dummy reservation" and if it says "unavailable", it's full.
Not necessarily. You cannot know how many seats are really available using an airline's booking site. You don't know how many seats are being held back until closer to flight day.

Since SW does not assign seats, why would they hold seats back? Why would they show unavailable in all 3 columns (including full price) if they were not full? If anything, they have been known to overbook (sell more tickets than they have seats).

i have been able to successfully judge how full swa flights are by looking at the availability columns as well. could be coincidental i suppose but i doubt that considering the amount of instances that have proven out.
When I was trying to decide if I should add the EBCI to our March flight the other day I just called the toll free number & asked. I figured why play guessing games. Found out there were still 50 seats available which is way more accurate than playing around online. But it's still 3 mo. 3 weeks away & it's for spring break so I figure it WILL sell out...
I am going to share my experience....I was very nervous since I was flying alone with the kids for Thanksgiving down to Disney..we needed to sit together. I read every tidbit of info about the EBCI....it actually bugged me since I bought my tickets long before it was implemented. I waited till the last minute and refused to pay an extra 60 dollars. I checked in 24 hours ahead...we were in A 30's. The flight was full so I was relieved. On the way back last night....same thing....we logged on 24 hours and were assigned A 54,55,56. I hope that helps you with whatever you decide. From what I have read there are some "glitches" to what is going on with the new process so my DH and I are returning in 12 weeks and I'm flying the 24 hour out plan. I'll save our 40 bucks for 2 cocktails. LOL
We booked back in June and for fun I've been watching the fares on our flights. This week, the Web Special is "not available" - tells me that, unless you want to pay full price for seats A1 - 16 (which are still available), the flight is sold out.
