How do you normally go to Hilton Head? Train? Drive or Fly? (We'll be going from NYC) Flying directly to the island is so much more expensive. What other airport can I fly into then?

Savannah, Ga, airport is about 50 minutes from HHI. It's a small, easy in and out type of airport. Very nice. Right by the interstate so you can be at HHI in less than an hour. Savannah is a beautiful little jewel of a southern city, so you might want to spend some time there too. Very historical and pretty. Charleston, SC, is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from HHI, I believe.

We also fly into Savannah. We take an early morning flight out of O'Hare for arrival in Savannah. We stop for lunch and play a round of golf before checking into HH. On the way home, we schedule an early evening flight so that we can play a round of golf, have an early dinner in Savannah and then head for the Savannah airport.

We are across the river from you and have always driven down to SC on our three trips to SC. As you've noted, the plane fares can very quickly mount with a family trip. We normally leave in the VERY early morning so the children can sleep through a susbtantial portion of the drive. Good luck with your planning!

We just returned from the Hilton Head resort where we bought into DVC and we drove. It was 13 hours including several stops for "necessities" and a 45 minute breakfast break. We left about 3:30 in the morning and the drive was not bad at all (DH and I switched up driving every 3 hours or so). I was actually surprised things went so smoothly because DH and I are definitely "directional challenged".

Anyway, I got the driving directions from www.freetrip.com which someone on this board recommended and the directions were right on the money. The only thing I would do differently if we drive next year is stop about half way down and spend the night. But going home is a different story, DH was so relaxed after a week at HH that he did the whole drive home himself! I was a happy camper. Anyway, I enjoyed the drive and considering what it would cost to fly out of Cleveland or even Pittsburgh, I'd drive again in a heartbeat.
