My DH got salad dressing (vinegar and oil) down the front of a brand new sweatshirt. Anyone have any tricks to get it out? I washed it, but it didn't budge.
TIA

treat the spot wtih Dawn dish detergent. You may have to do it a couple times but it should come out. My sister washed and dried my nephew's sweatpants before she noticed the stain and treated with Dawn and washed it again and it all came out.

If the Dawn doesn't work, try toothpaste. Regular old white normal paste (non-whitening, non-baking soda). You can try a hidden spot to see if it bleaches, but even if it bleaches your shirt, it's no more ruined than it already is.

We have also had good luck with Dawn. I have pre treated and scrubbed with an old toothbrush, rinsed, and then added some more.

I use a combination of original Dawn and Vivid, it has to be original dawn, something about the others does not work as well.

I have also used a purple cleaner from the auto department that I have gotten at walmart, it comes in a spray bottle like windex.

I have always used a product called Desolvit. It seems odd, since Desolvit is oily in nature too, but it always works. Just spray some on before throwing it in the wash and it's good as new.

Try what you like, but in the end, if the stain does not come out, "reactivate the oil". You can do this by applying more oil to the stained area.....then pretreat and wash normally.

If you still end up with a spot, soak the entire sweatshirt in the cheapest vegetable oil you can find ($2), "staining" the entire shirt and launder seperately. I have done this several times and has saved my shirts! I know it sounds crazy, but it works!

I use the Resolve Stain Stick (green with a red top) for oily or greasy stains. Put the stain stick over the greasy spot and let it sit at least overnight. Even if you have already dried the clothes, the stain should come out. We have lots of experience with this since my kids tend to wipe their greasy fingers on their pants and I can't tell when the clothes are wet that they are still greasy!

The spray Resolve does not work as well on greasy spots since you are supposed to wash the clothes before the spray dries. The Shout gel doesn't work as well either, in my experience, but it works well on other stains.

I have had good luck with Dawn as well when I didn't have any Stain Stick.

I also use the Resolve stain stick. But my "recipe" is to rub the stain stick on it, spray with Shout, then put a dab of laundry detergent on the spot. I then roll the clothing up real tight and let it sit, usually for a few days. Then I repeat it again (since its usually dry by then) and throw it in the wash on a soak first load (my washer has 15 & 30 minute soak loads).

Good luck! I hate oily stains.

my friend was working on his brothers car and lay down in a huge puddle of oil all over the back of his harley Davidson jeans jacket. He had washed it at least 4 times since and never got the oil out.
I used oxyclean laundry spray and it took every bit of the oil out. I just sprayed it on, let it sit for about 15 min and washed as usual.
One thing, if the oil has not come out completely you may set it in with the dryer.

I use GooGone - it works great on oily stains, I also use it on tomato sauce stains, and more. It is a citrus smelling spray.

Another fan of Dawn here. I pretreat everything with Dawn.

Dawn takes grease out of your way. :rotfl2:

Does anyone else remember that commercial? It really does work wonders on oily stained clothes.

I use Greased Lightning degreaser.
It's useful stuff.
DS used to work in a fried catfish restaurant and it took out the peanut oil from his clothes.
It also helps with car type grease sometimes.
It is also good for cleaning the stove.

:thumbsup2::yes:: I keep a small bottle in my laundry room for this very reason. And I use it straight from the bottle.

Same here! Wouldn't be without it. It sits on the shelf directly above my washing machine.:rotfl:

I used regular green Palmolive Dish Detergent. If that doesn't work, I use Lestoil. DH saw the title to this thread and said "burn it." I suppose that would work too!
