Hello! I wandered over here from the Weddings & Honeymoons Board looking for WDWPolyPrincess' most recent trippie, and a little birdy told me you folks might be interested in hearing about a wedding and honeymoon at Walt Disney World without wading through all our "OMG MOH Is MIA!!!"-type posts. ;)

I'll try to tone down the bride-y jargon, but please forgive me if my report lingers a little too long on such scintillating topics as tux fittings and the cost of chartering buses....

The short version: We were married February 4 in Morocco at Epcot. After the ceremony we took a Friendship Boat to the BoardWalk Inn and had a brunch reception at the Attic, which is the former DVC Member Lounge, upstairs from Jellyrolls. In the evening we all got back together again for an IllumiNations dessert party on the lower patio in the UK. It was a-friggin-mazing! (Long version to follow!)

Here are some preview pictures, but you can also click the PIX! link in my signature for a slideshow with more!

OK - really quickly, here's the story of how we met, because Disneyland brought us together! :thumbsup2

I was in line at Big Thunder Mountain and made a wish on a nickel at the pond. I wished to meet a guy who liked Disneyland and was straight. That night I got talked into going to the birthday party of a childhood friend I hadn't seen in a while, and I met his cousin.

On our first date, as the lights were about to go down on our second movie of the night, The Cousin casually mentioned that he had a Disneyland Annual Pass. I was like, "Wait - wha...?!!" and then had to wait 2 hours to talk about it!

...Next time I go on Big Thunder Mountain, I'm wishing for a Ferrari!

OK, so, we live in Disneyland - why did we get married at Disney World?

We investigated possibilities in Los Angeles and in my tiny hometown in Northern California. At first we were really leaning toward using the Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, where DF teaches puppetering classes. They are located in Charlie Chaplin's old studios, a neat Tudor-style collection of buildings.

But I started to become overwhelmed by all the stuff we'd need to bring in: tables, chairs, dishes, heat lamps, waitstaff, catering - everything! Plus, for even a modest gathering of 50 people with paper plates and box lunches plus cupcakes, we were looking at more than $15,000. The site fee alone would have paid for an entire Escape wedding at Walt Disney World! (There are two kinds of WDW weddings: the inexpensive Escape package wedding and the not-necessarily-expensive customizable Wishes wedding.)

I started stressing out. DF (that's "Dear/Disney Fiance" - sorry about the abbreviations!) asked me what I really wanted. I said I wanted to get married in the Court d' Anges at Disneyland, but when I'd called a year ago to ask, I was told Disneyland weddings cost $60,000. He told me to call again. This time when the snarky receptionist at Disneyland's weddings department said, "You do know that a Disneyland wedding costs $60,000, right?" I said, "Yes - please connect me with a wedding planner."

I explained to the planner that I didn't want a 150-person spectacle in the shadow of Sleeping Beauty Castle, I just wanted a simple ceremony in the Court D' Anges before the park opened and a reception at the Blue Bayou. She said, "Well, they won't let us use the Blue Bayou, but we are developing a range of lower-priced in-park weddings and you could have your reception on a balcony at the Grand Californian."

I was ecstatic. She said I had to wait a few weeks because they were only starting to figure this all out. Well, when I finally heard back from her, it turned out these "lower-priced" weddings are going to have a $25,000 minimum for just the ceremony portion, and they would top out at 25 guests! At least in Florida you can have 50 guests at a Magic Kingdom wedding for that price! I was devastated - it was so far out of our price range. I called DF from work sobbing about how now some other bride was going to get to be married in Court d' Anges when I was the one who'd thought it up, etc., etc.

So we went back to the drawing board, and I tentatively began pitching the idea of a WDW wedding. He liked the idea that we could get so much service and so many cool options for a third of the price of a Los Angeles wedding. He didn't like the fact that it was so far away - many of my relatives live in the Midwest and East Coast, but almost all of his are in Northern California.

But the more we looked at the alternatives - and their attendant hassles - the more we both began to think that a WDW wedding might actually work. We knew we didn't want the usual hotel wedding, but we didn't want to elope. (Well, *he* didn't want to elope :rolleyes1 ).

We started looking at an Escape wedding. I wanted to be married at Sunrise Terrace at Wilderness Lodge (it's the fourth-floor balcony overlooking the pool and Bay Lake), but there's a 10-person limit (including bride and groom), and DF's immediate family is seven people, so that was out. Then we ran into all the hassles of fitting a meal into the rigid and inconvenient Escape Wedding timeslots. 5:30 and 9pm are the only times you can make large-group reservations at nearly all Disney restaurants, and neither works great with the ceremony times. Plus, we wanted to have a dessert party. On top of all that, DF really felt strongly that if we were going all the way out to Florida to be married, we should at least be getting married in one of the parks.

We really liked the idea of Epcot - reasonable minimum expenditure requirements (on weekdays... in winter...) and a wide variety of ceremony locations. Our favorites were Japan and Morocco, but neither of us had been to WDW in 14 years, so we needed to go back out there to decide.

We flew to WDW for three days to have what they call a Planning Session. We visited the sites at Epcot, tasted food at the BoardWalk Inn, and spent 4 1/2 hours with our wedding planner at Franck's (adjacent to the Wedding Pavilion) hashing out all the details. Oh, and we got to try four flaovrs of cake and eight fillings! (burp!)

When we were done, we'd chosen Morocco, the Attic, and UK Lochside (that's the high-falutin' name for the lower patio on the lake at the UK pavilion).

We didn't have park admission, so we spent the rest of our trip at Downtown Disney and in the Pop Century Food Court and marveling at how blue the sky is and how green the trees are in Florida. I also met with my hair and makeup artist and we did an engagement photo session with one of our photographers at WL and the Poly:

I couldn't believe how close they got it to the magazine pic we gave them. I just wish I'd been more specific on the colors. You can't really tell here, but in real life the colors were salmon and maroon :crazy2:

Most of our guests were totally into it, but the shot doubled as a joke on our Disney-hater guests :lmao:

:thumbsup2 BEAUTIFUL pics! Can't wait for the report!!

OK - here comes some more!!

Unfortunately, Day One is very boring because we spent almost all of it traveling.

I got up early but blew half an hour posting my farewells to my buddies on the Weddings board, like a NERD! Still, I had enough time to get everything together and out the door relatively smoothly.

Here is a picture of Dr. J attempting to come along for Mommy & Uncle Daddy’s wedding... He's winking at you...

And here is a picture of all the luggage we took for a wedding and 2-week honeymoon: 1 suitcase, 1 carry-on and 1 backpack apiece. Not too shabby, but more than I’ve ever taken on a trip anywhere except my 3-week high school choir trip to Europe (when I brought along a pair of cheap undies for every single day so I wouldn’t have to do laundry...)

Not shown is a ginormous box we shipped to our first hotel, containing:

- 130 announcement/reception invites to be mailed the day after our wedding
- our custom bride & groom ears
- ceremony programs
- CD of ceremony music
- personalized mouse ear favors for our guests
- alligator cake knife
- cake topper, which DH made
- my two fascinators
- fake bouquet for Magic Kindom photo shoot
- Blurb photo guest book and two Slickwriter pens

I became a huge fan of shipping stuff on this trip. It was so convenient, and it enabled us to take along the comforts of home. I shipped my dress and shrug to Carolyn Allen's Bridal & Tuxedo, where they were stored, steamed, and delivered to me on the wedding day and then picked up and packed up to be shipped back home.

The dress and shrug get ready for their big trip!

Thanks to a DIS Boards tip, I also had two cases of bottled water from Costco.com – about $7.50 apiece (including shipping!) – delivered to the Beach Club Villas, and it saved us a ton on water in the parks.

Going through security and checking our bags at LAX went smoothly. We got our first wedding congratulations from the ticket agent, which was nice. We had a nonstop flight and got in to MCO a few minutes early. Our bags arrived safe and sound (my big worry).

When we saw the line at Alamo to pick up our rental car, I was SO glad I had prepaid online (which got us a discount on top of the great rate we found through a code on Mousesavers.com). All we had to do was put a credit card in the kiosk, press the “No” button six bazillion times to refuse various additional services, then take the printout to the garage. I had never seen car pick-up the way Alamo does it: All the cars are just parked in the garage, and people go to the section for the class of car they rented and pick one out.

It was a free-for-all – people were dashing all over trying to get the best cars. I watched as all the 4-doors were snatched out from under us, and we ended up with a 2-door Pontiac G6 with a rock in its tire (or something – it made a fwapping noise for our entire trip). We called it “the O Mobile” cuz it’s the car Oprah gave away on her show...

IMG_5984.jpg

We drove straight to my hotel, the glamorous Sheraton Safari Inn. I am a total Disney hotel snob, but I had enough Starwood Preferred Guest points for two free nights here – nothing to sniff at when you’re taking a 16-day trip! So I stayed there our first two nights (DF stayed in his fambly’s cheapo condo rental in the boonies).

Feel the glamour!

This is what our room looked like, except without the sassy zebra-print bedspreads, the plant, or the charm….

From there, we headed over to Downtown Disney for our first ADR, at Raglan Road. On the way to dinner, we picked up our Disney Dining Experience cards at Downtown Disney Guest Relations. These don’t seem like that great a deal anymore now that using them adds an automatic 18% gratuity to the bill (the DDE discount is 20%), but I guess we were gonna have to tip anyway.... The cast member tried to tell us that we couldn’t purchase one without active Annual Passes (we had the Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding free AP vouchers), but I drew on my DIS Boards research to let her know it was OK - hee hee!

While we were eating dinner, we started to take pictures of our food for the boards and then realized that we’d forgotten our Gorillapod, an adjustable tripod I learned about on the DIS (thanks Crystal!) and bought especially for our trip. Argh!

gorillapod-776476.jpg

We love the Gorillapod because we can take shots of the two of us together by affixing it just about anywhere. I was so disappointed, but then I got the idea to call our wedding photographers and see if they knew where we could get one. By this time it was about 9:30pm, but we knew they’re night owls, so we thought it was OK to call. They were so cool – they said they’d do some research and get back to us; when they called back, it turned out they’d gone to some random late-night camera store near their house and bought us the closest thing they could find.

So at 11pm we drove to their house in Celebration to pick it up, and we got to meet Jensey in person for the first time – she’s a huge WDW fan, and just as sweet and friendly as Nathan! It was really fun (but their cute little doggie was at Grandma’s house, so we didn’t get to meet him).

We got a leetle bit lost coming back from Celebration, which was to be a theme of our adventures in the O Mobile for at least a week. Is California the only state that gives you a highway on-ramp in the opposite direction to match every off-ramp...? It was verrrry late when we finally returned to the Sheraton....

...And that is the story of the first day of our trip!

I am so glad that a little birdie asked you to write a trippie! It is great so far. My dream is to be married somewhere at WDW. The where's and when's have changed a lot over the years. Of course, I first need to get a boyfriend :rolleyes1 Can't wait to read more!

I'm happy to see you're posting a thread here. I have been happily reading/lurking your TR and PJ on the wedding boards but didn't want to post anything since I am not a bride to be anytime soon.

I don't want to spoil the story for everyone, but your wedding pix were AMAZING. I love, love, love the necklace you wore and am also extremely impressed with how well you stretched the Disney dollar.

Congratulations to you and your husband...I bet it still makes you smile to hear him called that :goodvibes

wow! Planning a wdw trip by itself is hard enough for me, I tip my hat to you for pulling off a wedding and hunnymoon as well! Can't wait to read more!
