How to Gain Weight on Purpose

I have weight gain problems, I am 25 and only 97lbs and I had 2 children already my youngest being only 8 months old. DH tells me to drink milkshakes, he even went out and bought a blender so I could make my own, but I hate milk, I havn't drinkin milk since I went off the bottle when I was only 1. The Ensure stuff just doesn't seem to get to me. Not sure what to do and my doctor doesn't seem to worried about it, but DH does worry especially when he touches me and feels my bones

I'm 56 and having the same problem.. I was able to maintain my weight at 102 (although still underweight for my height) by drinking a lot of Boost every day.. (You might like that better than Ensure.. It's lactose free and doesn't taste an awful lot like milk.. I like the vanilla - my adult DD prefers the chocolate..) Anyhow - I was drinking the High Protein, but then I started to lose weight (I have a lousy appetite) so I've switched to the Boost PLUS (360 calories per serving as opposed to the 240 calories I was getting with the other).. I'm down to 96 lbs. now and looking for high calorie foods - but don't want to eat a bunch of junk because I'm not all that crazy about junk food and sweets..

I'm going to be watching this thread for healthy suggestions!

My son has had low weight problems on and off for years. I make him a milkshake with a bananna, vanilla ice cream, choclate syrup, whole milk, and a scoop of protein powder.

When his weight is good I leave out the protein powder and use skim milk and frozen yogurt. He actually drinks that for breakfast, it's one of the few things I never have to fight him on.

When his weight hit rock bottom a few years ago he had to drink Ensure, but he really hated it.

You made me laugh out loud!!!

Stacey2grls, you might have the answer--if it's possible to sneak the calories in without him knowing it, after he's gained the weight, you could back off and he wouldn't know the difference. Kind of like people who sneak mushed up vegies in the spaghetti sauce. :teeth:

Exactly Tigger&Belle! The whole point with me was I didn't want my daughter to think that everyday was an eating marathon. I know that sounds kind of silly with her being only 6, but, I don't want her to get into the habit of always eating, that is why I "snuck" in the calories without her even knowing it. ;)

IMO the DR. is over-reacting a bit. I'm very thin by nature and was extremely thin as a child sometimes it is just the way you are. My Dad was 5'11'' and weighed 130 lbs. My son is skinnier than yours he's 47 inches and weighs 40 lbs. he has been skinny since birth- I said he looked like a chicken, My DR. says it is more important if they stay on the same curve whether it is at the 10th, 50th or below all the percentages which is where he is. They don't want to see it going steady and then dropping. He's healthy never had to take antibiotics yet at 7, Happy, smart and active. did Disney without a stoller at 5 for a whole week. I wouldn't go out of my way to push extra calories and make him miserable, Just use whole milk, cheese, pudding, etc. If he's eating well and not sick it's probably just the way he is.

The carnation instant breakfast is a good way to up calories and tastes good not like ensure. When my mom was very ill and couldn't eat I used to make her inst. breakfast milkshakes and get like 500 calories in her. The instant breakfast also makes good hot chocolate.

Most nuts and seeds are heart healthy...especially raw. There's a trail mix at Walmart my kids like with several nuts, raisins and m&ms. You could always put together one of your own with his favorites. Chocolate, especially dark, is heart healthy in moderation. I agree with the others if he has always followed a certain curve on the grid it is less worry than if he dropping or showing no wt gain. It's nice that the DR is watching his growth. There are some yogurts made with whole milk if he likes yogurt. Good luck.
