How to find a doctor in the UK??

I'm in the States, but I found a medical study on the Internet by doctors in the UK, regarding a medical condition that my DD was diagnosed with last year. I'd like to contact the doctor(s), but have had no success finding them. I did find a website for the General Medical Council, and I did find a couple of the doctors there, but not with a way to contact them.

Here in the States, we have a DocFinder website that provides all sorts of information, including contact information. Is there something similar in the UK??

Mary Ann, my BIL is a paediatric surgeon and I'll be speaking with him this evening - I'll find out for you.
If you'd like to PM me with your daughter's condition and the Dr's name, he may be able to tell me where the Dr is.

....... I should say that my BIL and his wife have just had their first baby, so I don't know if I'll get any sense out of him this evening but he will know the answer!

Did it mention in the report if they worked for a hospital or health trust and give any names? If it did perhaps you could contact them via the hospital or health trust.

Shirley, congratulate your BIL and his wife on their new baby! And it's their FIRST one! I will e-mail you with the information, but I will certainly understand any delay in a response!

I'm not even sure what I'd actually say if I contacted any of the doctors involved in the case study...really just looking for a source of more information, since there seems to be very little available on the Internet. My DD's doctor announced two weeks ago that he's leaving his practice to do research at a pharmaceutical company, and meanwhile, my DD may be having a relapse, so I'm feeling more concerned than usual about the situation.

Annmarie, it did mention the hospital in the study, but I couldn't find contact information even with that, although I was hoping for e-mail information more so than a "regular" address which involves using an actual envelope and postage stamps and all. LOL The Internet has made me lazy.

Hi MaryAnn,

I'm a junior doctor in the UK. You say that you found an article on the internet. Was this through a medical journal website? Usually, journal articles have not only the authors of the paper, but also the institution or hospital which conducted the research. I would double-check this. If you want, I can search through MedLine which is a medical search engine - I get access to this through the BMA (British Medical Association) so I could check for the exact article and authors.

The GMC will have lists of all doctors registered with them in the UK (you have to be registered with the GMC in order to practise under the NHS here). I'm just about to check the site to see what access they give to names and addresses. It is unlikely that they'll provide exact details - if they do, I'm certainly not aware of it and I'd hate to think my details were there for all to see without my knowledge!! Argh, I've just found my details there! Fortunately only with my postal town! OMG.
Ok, I don't think you'll find the exact details with the GMC... so if I were you, I'd try to contact the institution they work for. Let me know, I'll be glad to look the article up or check for e-mail addresses etc etc!! Glad to be of service!

Thank you John! My last "thank you" to Shirley was a public acknowledgement for following through and e-mailing me with the information that I requested. Her BIL took some time from adoring his new baby girl and found one of the doctors involved in the case study, including the address for contacting her (I've never mailed anything out of the country before!). And I am SO very grateful, again, to Shirley and her BIL.

But I do want to thank you for your response! And I'm going to make a note of your username for future reference. I usually hate to impose on people, but I recently decided that I'm going to do what I have to do to get information and quality treatment for my DD. So watch out...you haven't heard the last of me! LOL

We were very comfortable with her current specialist, but he is now leaving to work for a pharmaceutical company, so that and a recurrence of my DD's health problems have prompted me to dig for more information. I just wrote an e-mail to a specialist asking him to take her case, even though he's supposedly not taking new patients. (Can't hurt!!) Meanwhile, I plan on becoming as knowledgeable as I can, and look forward to contacting the doctor responsible for that study.
