This is my 1st trip flying with a 1 yr old any tips on keeping them busy on a 2 hour flight.

If you've purchased them a seat it's likely they will fall asleep in theri car seat.

Books to quietly read to him/her, small soft toys and a favorite stuffed animal, basically any quiet toy that will pack easily will work.

If you child falls asleep easily in the car the same will happen on the plane. Bring water and snacks, a bottle or pacifier (something to suck) will help their ears during take off and landing. Their stuffed animal or blankie too.

If your child watches tv, a dvd player and their favorite show will work.

I second that... with Barney or Teletubbies... and if possible, buy baby a seat, bring his/her carseat and he will sit as if he is in his own car and then everyone is happy!!

We flew with my oldest son when he was 14 months old and a friend gave us a brand new lift the flap book and that kept him busy for long time. I am not sure if this will work for a 1 year old, but when my twins were two years old they loved stickers. It took them a while to peel them off and get them on the paper. Good luck.

I'd be careful with stickers to make sure they dont get stuck all over the plane. Do they still make Colorforms? They might be a better option.

When DS was 16 months, we flew with no problems (he had his own car seat, in his own seat). Cheerios or other small, easy to eat food really helps, along with juice/drinks as others have mentioned. Small little treats that you can wrap (even wrapping some small toys from home works -- you don't have to spend a fortune) are great because of the time it takes to unwrap and the thrill of discovering what's inside help make time pass, and the idea is to wait until child is restless and then pull out a new surprise. Bring a small, wet washcloth in a plastic zip top bag for the inevitable clean-ups, along with at least one full change of clothes on board. A favorite story book that you can read, softly, over and over is great. Fellow passengers, esp. in front of you, will be friendly and helpful as long as you keep child from kicking the seat or banging the tray table....

Wrapped toys isn't such a good idea these days because the TSA wants nothing wrapped as you go through security... sorry...

True, but for a little one you can loosely wrap -- no tape -- and it's seconds to do/undo at security, if necessary. Or, you can bring along the light tissue wrap and put it on while on the plane (one seat away from 1-year-old and you could be on another planet ;-)). The element of wrapping has been, in our experience, worth it for the way it grabs and holds the little one's attention....

That's true--use tissue and teh "Tootsie Roll" effect :)

We always take an early morning flight and they are so tired they usually sleep the whole way. Hopefully my almost 1yo will do the same in 3 days.

I stick a bunch of different toys and snacks in the diaper bag to keep them entertained in case they start to get cranky.
