How To Deal w/ Princess Dress in Summer?

What I am going to do for our trip in May is, go to either target or carters and buy a pair of cotton shorts, and a tank top. i will let dd3 wear her princess dress over her tank top, and shorts, and when she gets too hot, or it gets itchy, we can just pull it off, then and there. DD complains when stuff is itchy, so I am not going to even take that chance!!!

There are two really cute Sundresses at Walmart right now 1 Ariel (got this one for DD4) and 1 Tinkerbell. They are cotten and come with a little long sleeve jacket/top good for protecting the arms/shoulders from the sun as well if the evenings get cooler.

Sounds like my lil Drama Queen... We'll be traveling to the world in May and with changing costumes being a daily routine here I've decided to dress her in a cotton tank and shorts... Looks like i'll also be bringing at least 2 extra outfits every day... A nicer one and then just a play outfit... Now the last few days are here before our trip I'll be making a few visits to our local Disney Stores... Who knows she might have a special dress waiting for her when we arrive... If she's good!!! LOL

I make my daughter's princess sundresses to wear in the parks. They are cotton and much cooler than than the itchy ones commercailly sold. Since they are cotton they are also washable. She has Snow White, Mulan, Tinkerbelle and I am working on Cinderella for someone else.

Never underestimate the power of a princess costume to overcome the heat! My DD (4 at the time) spent several hot June days at the parks dressed as a princess, and I couldn't get her to go for the lightweight sundress style either, had to be the real Disney costume! She just wore a light undershirt underneath to keep it from being scratchy. Wearing clothes underneath seems like it would be bulky and uncomfortable, so I always carried a change of clothes in a ziploc bag with me. She never once used then though- the extra attention they get in costume is just too much to give up I guess! So I would be prepared to change, but don't be surprised if she suddenly becomes very tolerant if the heat and claims not to need it!

We are doing the dinners at CRT and Akershus next week. I have Cinderella's dress in a gallon ziplock and the same for Sleeping Beauty's dress. I'll toss the ziploc in my backpack for the day and she can put it on right before we go to eat.

Now to figure out what to do with the Pirate costume for her twin brother. ARGH!

So I didn't read the other responses...so sorry for any repeat advice!

With the time your reservation is I would probably take her dressed up and then let her wear the dress for as long as she is comfortable afterwards. With our dd we usually take a clean small plastic trash bag, lay the dress inside, and then roll it up and carry it in our backpack when she's done wearing it. We just make sure she's either dressed underneath or we've got a change of clothes in the back pack.

To be honest, I don't know how ANY little girl can stand to wear those scratchy costumes, summer heat or not!

I too highly recommend a tank top (or camisole) and bicycle shorts under any costume, heat or no. I think a cotton tank would absorb sweat much better and be more comfy.

Take a moment to look through my Flickr photos linked in my signature. We've had a little experience with this princess costume thing.......

There are other methods of coping......

A true Cinderella FAN!!!:rotfl2:

This costume is breathtaking.
I love all of your daughter's costumes! I'm jealous; I want to be a princess too!! :wizard:

Many thanks!

My biggest suggestion is to keep it all fun. Don't make her wear it if she doesn't want to. Let her put it on and take it off and put it back on again if she wants.

Get your photos early before she starts to wilt. And when you can..... consider a trip in the winter when it's more comfortable!

There is just nothing cuter than a little princess in front of the castle, or wandering through Fantasyland in costume!

I think another key thing is not to wear any special "princess shoes" but to have them wear their normal sneakers.

Definitely! :thumbsup2 I've seen lots of little princesses walking around in costumes and sneakers! Comfy sandals or well broken in ballet-type flats work great too!

On our trip in Sept (with 95 degree swelterign heat) We did BBB at 10:30 at the castle, went and got her pics taken at the expo hall, then went to lunch at the castle. Worked out great - she was in a/c all the time.

Her dress I should mention was the shorter-ballerina style Cinderella dress and wasn't that bad to begin with.

Afterwards, we saw the parade on Main Street then took her back to the hotel and the pool until dinner. Then we changed her into a cute Disney sundress for dinner and the erst fo the night, and so she still had on her BBB make up and hait do - which by the way did last 3 days!

Just a suggestion that worked well for us. I did not put her in any other princess gowns during the trip other than that day - it was just too hot.

I just wish I could find some reasonably priced princess dresses for my daughter. I've pretty much given up.

I found a Disney Store outlet near our home. About 3 hours away and called to find out if they had any princess dresses. They had a lot to choose from. I was able to get them for more than 1/2 off the regular price and they shipped them to me (which I paid for). The dresses were beautiful and even though they were the previous years style several CM's said they had never seen them before.

My 3 yr old DD is intent on wearing one of her princess dresses to CRT in August. Our ressies are at 10:20 and we are going into the park for EE that day. How do you deal w/ the dress? Do you change your princess before the meal? Do you let her tour the park as a princess? Is that a ginormous pain?

The answer is - Whatever the Princess wants!!!

My DD always wore her dress all day every day, but she also "tested" the dresses out for scratchy-hot factor. I agree with all the PP that say pack a change of clothes. I'd pack a sundress, it could fold up into a ziploc bag.
