How to change resorts at 7 month point online?

I’m new to online booking.... I made my reservations for OKW (OKW contract) at the 11-month mark, and next week marks the 7-month mark. I’d like to try to go for one of several other places. I just want to make sure I’m doing this right... at 8am I can hit “modify” from the reservation from my dashboard, put in the dates, and the other dvc resorts with availability will pop up. If something I want is available, I can then select it, and everything holds until I confirm...? Just to be sure, I do not have to first “cancel” my current reservation before exploring something else? Tia!

Also, I do this all from the dvc website and not MDE of the Disney site?

Correct. You use modify, search as you normally would for a room, choose it, then it cancels your existing reservation for the new one. No risk of losing the original while trying to get the new reservation.

Great question . Hope you don't mind me tagging in . If I have a week-long reservation but say want modify the first 3 days only is it the same process?

You can't split your reservation and modify only a part of it. You can add or reduce from the reservation, change dates, change resorts, etc. You couldn't just modify the first 3 days to another resort. Now you could modify the original reservation to shorten it and then grab the other reservation to go with it but that runs the risk of the new reservation being gone when you go to get it.

Because you can’t split a reservation online, when you make your 11 month reservation at your home resort you might want to book it in the segments you want to have if you hope to schedule a split stay at 7 months. For example, at 11 months we booked 4 nights in a studio and then 4 nights in a 1BR at our home because we hoped to get those first 4 nights in a studio at CCV. One caution is to make the two home resort bookings different in some way (different guest name, view, unit size) because MS has been known to combine separate reservations into one if they appear the same to them.

For me is just as easy to call member services, I booked my stay at the eleven month, called at seven transferred to another resort and added a few more days. They looked at everything for me, offered help, answered my questions. For me, I just like talking to a person and have had great luck dealing with ms. With the online options available more members must be using it because wait times for ms are less than a minute, at least the last couple times I called they were. I must add that in my case more often then not, I mess up online and end up worse then when I started.

The problem with calling is the 1 hour delay in being able to make any changes. Depending on the resort and room type they could be gone within that hour.

I like lurking...trying to piece together a 3-4 night trip during food & wine at BCV or BWV...

I wasn't aware of the hour delay and that would for sure make a difference for certain stays. Luckily, for me my stays have been simple, two weeks in either a one or two bedroom, boom, done. Some day, I may need this info though, always picking up something new here.

Remember if you want to modify to a split stay at 7 months, book your home resort in 2+ sections. In different names too to prevent auto merging I was advised on here.

So I am doing 11 nights next Xmas, I’ll book a 6 night stay then a 5 night stay at SSR. Then modify each.

I would stay at SSR if I could get a renovated room, but think chances will be low next Xmas, just seen some new pictures (not the ones shown at the DVC meeting) and the Reno rooms look fantastic.

I've just gone through the online modification screens, but I have a question about points usage. When I get to the screen for allocating points from my contracts, it doesn't show the points that the original reservation is using. Therefore, it wants me to borrow points from next year, even though I will have plenty of points once the original reservation is canceled.

Is it really going to borrow points, then put the original points back into this use year?

Thanks!

It shouldn't borrow points or I think ask about borrowing points unless you need to? Seems strange, are you sure you have the correct dates? Be careful there is a bug from memory where when you modify, the last date you select isn't the check out date as it usually is, but you are booking that night too. Very confusing I noticed this 5 months ago.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll have to check all my points balances, since I've banked some of last year's points and have already taken a vacation this year (just got back home last Friday). Then I'll do the online modification again and see if it tallies up. I'll keep the last night bug in mind too!
