You need to have 10 posts before you can put an avatar on.

AFAIK, there's only one.

Yeah, many newbies think they have actually start 10 different threads to get their 10 posts. You only have to post 10 times - on whatever (test) thread you want.

When did you get you 10 posts? It usually take a little time (30-40 minutes) for the system to recognize that you've reached that milestone to grant privileges. You can't change the avatar here (on the page where the posts are listed). You have to hover over your username in the upper right and click on "Avatar". I found it was easier to download the file (for the picture) than doing the drag & drop thing. And the picture must be smaller than 1MB.

Thank you! I hit 10 posts but still wasn't seeing the option so I probably just didn't wait long enough. What about changing your signature? Is that similar? Mine is from the old boards but I can't find how to change it again and it's driving me nuts. The option just isn't listed when I searched another thread. Is that supposed to be a 10 post count thing too?

Yes, signatures, posting pictures and conversations (what PMs are called here) are not available until you have 10 posts. As I said, there is a bit of a time lag from when you've posted that 10th post until the privileges are available.

The Avatar and Signature links in the window that shows after you hover over your username in the upper right are where those changes/additions are made.
