How thick am I? Passports.....

OK...

I've been checking on the US Embassy website as to whether our passports meet all the neccesary requirements for entry into the USA in Jan 2008.

I used a 'wizard' on the site which tells you what is needed in relation to the date your passport was issued. I have a REALLY stupid query on my daughter's passport which needs to be machine readable and have a digital photo as it has no 'chip' - I can't tell if it's a bloomin digital photo or not. I realise how stupid this sounds, it's pretty obvious on our other passports (or it's not neccesary), so will I have to visit our 'local' (not!) passport office to be on the safe side??? Help!

Hi

If you run you finger over the "photo" if it has an "edge" it will not be a digital photo. If there is no edge (i.e. completely smooth), then it is digital.

When was the passport issued?

Hi Ali,
As Alice said, if you can't "feel" the photo underneath the plastic covering the infomation page, then it will have been Scaned "digitally" onto the paper & you will be OK .

Its been a very long time since the passport office stuck the photo you send to them directly into the passport they issue to you, so I am sure you will be fine.

Hi girls and thanks so much for your replies.

I am pretty sure now that it IS a digital photo, to cut a long story short I think that I have looked at it for so long that I have convinced myself it might not be!!!!!!!! And then I showed it to DH thinking he would tell me I was 'nuts' but he wasn't sure either!!! What a pair of dimwits!!!

It was issued Apr 06, so as you say, more then likely is OK!

I can't believe how dim I have been on this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine was issued in 1999 and the photo is digital, so I think it is completely safe to say that yur daughter's is a digital photo

Hi Ali,

Both mine and my boyfriends were issued in 2000 and they are both digital. They have what looks like a slight watermark over them and there is no raised edge.

The watermark effect is the same across the whole page so I presume it is something printed after. Our old passports definitely had an edge and no watermark effect. The digital photos look more grainy than the old stuck on photo too.

Good question. My son is aged 6 at present and will be 7 when we fly. We fly Nov 29th and return Dec 14th, his passport expires June 17th 2008. We just about have a full six months after returning to this country to qualify for his visa. However, to be on the safe side we will probably renew rather than take a chance.

is the photograpth page the very last page or the last but one?

Last but 1 is a digital photograpth. If its the last page its a normal photo and if you look at the back of the passport you can normally see the outline of the photo
