How successful are people renting points?

We have been a DVC Member for over 8 years.

We have been fairly successful in our point management in the past, by keeping track of the calendar, staying at less costly times of the year, and staying mostly Sunday through Thursday nights.

Now that our two kids are nearing school age, we are thinking about adding on points, because we think we may have to stay at more costly times of the year, and we may want to increase our time at WDW, which would require staying Friday and Saturday nights.

One of my main concerns with adding on points at this time is that we may not be able to use all of the points for a couple of years. We have been pushing about one years worth of points forward each year. That leads me to thinking we could either wait to add on points for about 2 years, or add on points now, and rent any extra points we may have.

I have been reading the posts for awhile now, and am starting to understand the mechanics of renting points.

What I am having difficulty determining from the posts are, how easy is it to rent points, and how successful are most people who try to rent points (for example: do most people - rent most points - for about what they wanted for them or do things usually NOT work out xx% of the time)

I do not want to get into the renting business long term, but before I purchase additional points, I would like to have some kind of idea of what my chances would be to rent additional points.

Thanks to all, and I look forward to your answers.

I had posted this in the "DVC Rent/Trade" forum, but then thought it might be more appropriate in this forum. If I am off the mark, please let me know.

try it and see if it works for you.

this year is my first year to rent points - my brother needed the money - and so far I have been very lucky.

no one has back out and everyone has paid me.

the rental/trade board here is free - so use it!!!

Also post on the Orlando hotels board and the resort boards - let them know that their is a rental/trade site here.

now don't post to your own link - that is just unreasonable - but to the board itself is fine.

also look before you post - you might be able to make some posters happy without posting yourself.

there are still people who post on the Dis that don't know they can rental DVC from members and save them so money.

I even had a person wanting to rent a 2-bedroom for 2 weeks - I say no - I didn't want all my points tied up in one person rental - just in case something happened.

but you make your own rules.

If you offer $10 a point and they offer $8 a point and you have time to find another rental - do it!!!!

I have rented out points when we had surplus one year (or thought we did) at $10 and $11 per point. We have also rented other members' points, both by having their spare points transferred to our account (actually banked those) and by renting a ressie when the member we were talking to found she could not transfer points that UY; rates when I rented from others were between $10 and $10.45 a point.

It has worked well in all five transactions. Plus I have met very nice people (I plan to rent from at least one of them again - or perhaps do an 11 month home-resort priority ressie swap). Yes it requires trust on both sides, and newbies can be infuriatingly dimwitted about how things work sometimes. But in the end, our experience has been positive.

Still, in your situation, unless there is a convincing reason to add-on right now (like that awesome AP or II promotion at SSR). perhaps holding onto your money a little longer makes better sense.

Actually we've had a lot more luck renting to people from this board than in sharing/renting in the family. I've only rented out a few times (caused by a large family bailout on vacation) but in all cases it has gone well. Have even made a couple of new friends!

That being said, however, I wouldn't buy thinking you can count on renting! I have a ressie up for rent right now (hubby had surgery and we had to cancel) that doesn't look like it's going to go. I actually thought it would be an easy one as it's in the middle of sold out time during the Food & Wine festival. So you just never know. You probably don't want to count on it if you HAD to rent to pay the points off.

I think as long as you plan ahead, and rent the points out early, you will have NO problem!!! Esp. if you can rent out your points while you have the 11 month "home advantage" (start listing your points about 13 months out, so you can call right at the 11 mo. day).

I recently "transferred" points into another members' account (I liked this idea much better than making a ressie for someone). I did not post at all, but he had posted that he was looking for points. I called him, and he took all of them (175 pts). He sent me a contract with his membership number on it, I signed the contract. He sent me the money, and I called member services and made the transfer. It was really easy!!!

I had been reading the rent/trade board for awhile, as I knew we would have extra points to rent this year....but, when I saw his request for points...it was a perfect match!!!

Renting can have it's share of headaches (I would be especially careful of renting during hurricane season for the next few years), but if you can do it right (or even stick to "transferring" points) you should be fine.
