Ok, finally decided to take the plunge. i am awaiting a call back from our guide-probably tomorrow now-to give her our CC # for the $500 down payment and 30 days later the final 1015 deposit.

we are going to buy 150 points at SSR....finally.

if we buy in, how soon can we use our points?

we have a trip planned in 4 weeks, will we be able to cancel that cash room and use the points?

if we can get that money back, that would be great, or is that too soon?

Cant wait to finally own DVC!!

You should be able to make a ressie about 24 hours after giving the $500.00 and since they will have the rest of the deposit, you should be able to stay a month from now IF they have any rooms available on points.

Congrats and " Welcome Home "

I think you will have to wait until you close. It's been 9 years since we bought so I could be wrong, but It doesn't seem likely.

We purchased just prior to the referral promotion ending on 1/20 and were able to use our points within days. Specifically, I purchased on 1/18 and made a deposit via CC, and our documents arrived the following Monday!! Enclosed with the documents were our temporary Member ID cards with our member numbers. I called MS the next day and had no problems using the the 06' points that were issued to us to reserve our 1 BR at SSR this June :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 . Best part is, we will receive our annual allotment again in October 07:cool1:

Good Luck and welcome to the neighborhood!

There's a big difference between booking a room with new points vs. actually STAYING at a DVC resort on the points. DVC allows members to book immediately after buying (note even before making a written commitment) because they can easily cancel the reservation if the deal falls thru. For the most part, DVC is out nothing if you rescind the offer to buy and they cancel the ressie.

As I said in another thread, actually USING the points for a stay before the closing is a bit like taking possession of a home before you've closed on it.

In the past DVC has allowed members to stay on their points before closing by signing a document agreeing to compensate DVC if the deal should be cancelled. You'd be presented with a per-night rate for the room and have to agree to reimburse Disney if the closing did not occur.

Ask your Guide if they will still do that. If you feel like playing a little Chicken, imply that the deal is contingent upon the following:

1. DVC gets you a room for your dates
2. DVC lets you use your points for those dates
3. If necessary, DVC works with CRO to waive any penalties associated with the cancellation of your cash reservation

Those really aren't unreasonable requests. You could try to hold out for a DVC room at a specific resort, but I would probably draw the line there myself. ;) One month is pretty short notice.

To give you an idea of how soon you can use your points, we purchased points on a Tuesday and stayed at the VWL that night, Wednesday and Thursday nights on points. It can be done but work it out in advance if you can.

When I added on last month , MS told me I would be able to use the points right away . They told me I would not have to wait until after closing .

I only needed them right away to make a ressie for this summer not to stay , but could have , if needed to!
