How should we dress for a Broadway show (Lion King)?

We bought tickets online last night to see The Lion King in NYC at the Amsterdam Theatre over Labor Day weekend. What is the dress code for a show like this? I've been to see a few shows in DC, where I dressed up. How should we dress for this show (the 8pm show)? I'd prefer not to dress up if we can get away with it since we'll be spending the day in the city.

Hi there! I live in NYC and have gone to countless shows. These days, there is absolutely no need to get dressed to the nines. Folks attend in t-shirts, jeans, shorts. A number also wear suits and nice dresses. The majority of men typically wear chinos and a shirt, women wear the equivalent "preppy" garb.

It's entirely what you feel comfortable in. Don't feel pressured to wear fancy schancy duds at all!

And have a great trip!

Hey Tina,

Rick is absolutely right. We've gone to several Broadway shows and the attire ranges from jeans and t-shirts to Evening wear. It's all what you feel like wearing. You won't be out of place casual and you won't be out of place dressed up.

Enjoy. I still have to see this one.

DH and I went to see TLK 2 Sundays ago, and we saw a great variety of attire. DH just wore jeans and a nice shirt. I was a little more nicely dressed. But we saw people wearing shorts and tshirts, and some people were dressed up. Don't worry about what to wear, just wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Enjoy the show! DH and I absolutely loved it.

I agree, except I'd say that you should go somewhere between the shorts and t-shirts and the fancy stuff. It's true that people do wear shorts to shows but if you can avoid it, it would be more polite to be slightly less casual, of course without sacrificing comfort - something like khakis instead of jeans, etc.

My attitude is for those prices I want to be comfortable!

It's usually the out of towners that go in dresses and gowns. A nice shirt and skirt is nice, but you can get away with jeans and a t-shirt even. Things have changed. I'd say just dress comfortably and bring a sweater, sometimes the air conditioning gets cold.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think we'll stick with shorts (khakis) and polo shirts unless it gets cool enough to spend the day in long pants (which I doubt). I can't wait to see this show!! :D

I'm going this Saturday, 2:00PM show. I'm wearing dockers and a nice shrit. This is still Broadway after all. JMHO

Sounds perfect. :) Have a great time, it's a wonderful show!
