How scary are the rides at Universal

We love Disney, but our kids would love to try Universal this time. We are not huge thrill ride people. I can do Star Tours at Disney HS, Soarin, Test Track, etc. but I don't do the rollercoasters, even at Disney. My youngest son, 7, is also this way.

We've heard the rides at Universal are pretty ride. Comparing them "scare factor" to the ones at Disney, can you give me an idea if the US rides are going to be way too intense for us? We had hoped to do Spiderman, Transformers, Forbidden Journey, Simpsons, etc. Thank you!!!

Thank you for the question~ I was just about the ask the same thing!! Going in 2 weeks and pretty much get scared on most Disney rides (I dont even like Star Tours).

I think that the Gringotts ride is great. It has a BTMRR type drop. Its not too bad. Also Spiderman and Transformer are the same kind of rides. Part simulator part dark ride.

I get scared on some rides too. I won't do Hulk, Rip ride rocket, or Dragon Challenge. Suess Landing is very Fantasyland type attractions. The Seuess trolley in the sky is a lot like the people mover. IOA is just fun so wonderful to just walk through. In the Studios theres Gringotts, Despicable me and the ET ride. Also MIB-Toy Story.

The worse thing about Universal rides is sometimes they can toss you about a bit. Forbidden Journey and Despicable are the worst about this in my opinion.

If you and your kids are "Scaredy cats" you should still be able to have fun at Universal as long as you stay off the roller coasters (including Mummy and Gringotts) and Doctor Doom. If you're big Potter fans, you may as well try Gringotts though, there is a mini-drop and it goes fast-ish (40 mph range I believe) at times. Jurassic Park may scare you as well since the dark ride portion features a lot of animatronic carnivores and a giant t-rex at the end with a Splash Mountain-like drop.

But there are still plenty of family-friendly fun things to do.

At USF:
-Despicable Me, an obvious kid friendly IP. It's just a simple 3-D simulator attraction. If motion sickness is a problem, you can ask to sit in the front row and enjoy the attraction without movement.
-Shrek 4-D, it's just a simple 4-D theater show like Philar Magic.
-Transformers, it's a dark ride/simulator hybrid. A lot of in your face action, but the ride does nothing crazy.
-E.T., it's pretty much the exact same thing as Peter Pan's Flight.
-KidZone has several other attractions aimed at young audiences. Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster is a family/kiddy coaster that's less intense than BTM and 7DMT. Animal Actors is a cute family show too.
-Simpsons is a simulator ride, but unlike DM if there is any motion sickness issues you are pretty much out of luck. There is also Kang & Kodos in the area, which is just a simple Dumbo like ride.
-Men in Black is a shooter dark ride, think of Buzz Lightyear with better looking animatronics. It has a lot more motion though, it can spin you around a bit. I enjoyed the ride when I was a young scaredy cat kid though.

At IOA:
-At Marvel you should avoid Hulk and Doctor Doom like the plague, but Storm Force Acceleration is pretty much a tea cup ride. Spider-Man is also a dark ride/simulator hybrid and is honestly one of theme park's biggest marvels (pun intended). It's a must do.
-Toon Lagoon has water rides, so if getting wet is a no-no you should just pass. Popeye is a fun family ride though, think Kali River Rapids but better. If you refuse to do Splash Mountain, avoid Dudley Do-Right. It's the same ride except with worse animatronics and scenes and a little bit more intense of a drop.
-Camp Jurassic is one of the best kid playgrounds in all of Orlando, it's worth checking out if everyone doesn't want to do the River Adventure ride. They are also opening up a brand new meet and greet encounter with raptors this weekend that looks fun.
-Hogsmeade is a beautiful area, but Forbidden Journey may be a pass. It might be the scariest ride on property and is uniquely intense. If you think you can handle the movement (that includes being on your back temporarily) and the darkness with dementors in your face then good luck. Flight of the Hippogriff is a fun family coaster though and the entire area is worth checking out alone.
-The rest of the park is very kid friendly, two shows in Lost Continent and the entire Seuss area. The Cat in the Hat used to have some "intense" spinning, but they've toned the ride down as of late.

I do not like or go on thrill rides...so....the fact I love the Transformer ride is a real compliment. It is an awesome ride! The technology is amazing!

Thanks for the info this is exactly what I've been looking for.

I just finished my trip report. My DD loves thrilling coasters but is terrified of creepy scenes. My DS loves thrills but hates big drops (so no to most coasters - Test Track and BTMR are his faves but not Space). My DH gets motion sick. It was interesting :)
