How old were you when you purchased your first home?

It was in 1989 and I was 37. It was a 2 bedroom townhouse we bought for $69,900.

I was 32 and single when I bought my townhome at the pre-construction price of $113,000. It is now worth $300,000. In eight years, DH and I will be mortgage free (we rent out his house in Trenton, which will also be paid off in 8 years).

DH and I purchased our first home about a year ago. I was 28 and he was 36. We paid $300,000 (which around here is very reasonable these days  ) but now just almost a year later is worth easily $75,000 more.

ETA: It's a 3 bedroom, 2 full bath ranch with full basement and we live in Philly suburbs. We also were able to afford a little more because we really lucked out with our taxes.

I was 21, DH was 22, it was in 1998. We bought the home we still live in. It's a single family home (all that is available around here), 2-story with a full basement, approx 2500 sq feet, 3 bedroom, 3 bath on a quiet, dead-end street where my kids can play outside. We paid less than $100,000.

I cannot imagine living in an area that a "shack" is $800,000????? I live in SE Ohio.

DH was career military and we were on the move a lot (spending almost 9 years overseas). So when he retired we finally bought our first home at age 38/39.

I was 35, and we paid $120,000 for a townhouse. We sold it a few months back for $315,000.

We were 23. It was a single-family home, below 200K when we bought it, and we were SO poor! I won't even tell you how we scraped together our pathetic "downpayment". We bought that house because our apartment rent kept going up every time the lease came up, and we couldn't afford that anymore. Our mortgage was less than the rent.

I was 28 and DH 31. It was a tiny 2 BR cape that we purchased from a family friend for just over 100,000. Did some work then moved three years later. Doubled the space and the mortgage.

When DH and I got married in 1975 we rented an older farmhouse for a year, paying $100 per month in rent. The following year we started buying it, so we were 19 then and I think we paid something like $17,000 for it.

In 1980 we moved to our current home, which we bought from DH's parents and I believe we paid about $55,000 for it. It is a 2-story farmhouse, 4 bedroom, 3 bath and had been extensively remodeled in 1973. In 1987 we had siding put on, and added a 24'x24' family room. We love it here.

I was 26 and DH was 34. We bought it in 2002. It is a single-family home that we custom built with our realtor's in-house builder. We paid under $300,000 for it, but we probably couldn't afford it if we had to buy it at today's prices! It's a 4 bedroom, 3 bath colonial with cathedral ceilings in the master bedroom and family room. It has a dining room and a den and a HUGE kitchen (not that I cook  ). The basement isn't finished off completely, but it's suitable for the cats and storage and the attic is huge and could be finished. We have almost 5 acres of land, which is what REALLY sold me on this property. :goodvibes

I'm glad we did it when we did because we probably wouldn't be able to afford it now with the way prices have shot up in my area. It doesn't really benefit me in any way since I have no intention of selling. :confused3

Bought our first, and only, house 23 years ago, at ages 30 & 35. we paid $95,000 for it (4 br, 2&1/2 bath, panelled library with fireplace and built-in shelves, butler's pantry, formal living & dining rooms, plus family room, detached garage with apt)

We've done renovations over the years, but our next move won't be until one of us can't get up and down stairs anymore. (although I have been thinking about elevators)

I was 24, it was a 4 BR saltbox on 1/2 acre and it cost me $29,900. That was 1988.

I am in the process of buying a house right now. 4 BR, 3 bath with a 6000 SF barn on 6 acres - $222,000.

:tilt:

I was 19 when I bought my first condo. It was back in 1990, so I can tell you the price was very low.

When I was 19 & DH 20 we bought a mobile home for $500 ( they wanted to get rid of it fast! We didnt have to put much into it all all..it was nice until we got pregnant with #3 and didnt have any more room....so when we were 21& 22 we bought a brand new 1,200 ft mobile home which lasted us until all the kids were getting too big so last year at the ages of 26 & 27 we bought our first real house , it was under 200K and is huge compared to what we had before and its in the country ( whoo hooo! ) It took us a while to be able to afford a "real" house because we are a family of 6 with only one income so we are a bit behind on things :rotfl:

I was 23 when I got my first house. It was $55,000 which was the norm back in the 80's.

I was 26 when we purchased our house. 4 bedroom cape with 1 car garage under and 2 full baths for $148,000 in 1996. It's about 1600 sqft, so it's not big but it's great for a starter home. I am glad we got it when we did....today houses just like ours are selling for well over $350,000

My husband and I are both 33. We are in the process of building our first home. We have been married for 12 years, and have always rented a house. Of course, the house is taking so long to be built, we may be 34 by the time we move in and are official home owners.
