How old were you when you purchased your first home?

28 dh 34. for $63,000 in 1988. 3 bdrm. 1 1/2 bath. 2 car garage. 3/4 acre. Sold it for 132,000 in 2003. Had $10,000 down pmt. We had no help from parents like many of my friends did.

I was 28, DH was 29 ( just a few weeks shy of 30) in 1996 for 317,500 on the south shore of long island (lido beach) My DH fell in love with it the minute we walked in and HAD to have it. I thought it was too big ( 5br and an office/maids' room-like I could ever afford a maid) and too overpriced ($275K was my limit) but we both had jobs with good advancement possibilities at the time so we stretched.

32 yo/dh 49 yo - both of us first time homebuyers: 2004 - $285,000 condo - scraped together (I mean scraped the bottom of the barrel) $15,000 in life savings for downpayment. We'll have to move when we have a baby since it's just a 1 br/1 ba.

Year:1976
Place: small town Alabama
My age:19, husband 20
40 year old 2 bedroom one bath house, no central air - floor furnace and one window airconditioner in kitchen, no carport or garage, just gravel drive. 900 sq ft..........price 16k....we sold it 5 years later for 23k.

Every time I buy a car I can't help but think, gee my first house cost less than this! :teeth:

We bought our first house in 2002. I was 31, DW was 28.
3 bdrm / 2 bath 1500 sq. ft for $142k.

We got an FHA loan and bought the house with a total out of pocket cost of about $800. Lots of people say they can't afford a house because they don't have 20% down payment, but the fact is that it's often possible to buy a house with very little cash to put down. By taking a slightly higher interest rate, we got a rebate back on the loan that covered most of the closing costs. Then we used what they call a gifting program to get around the FHA's 3% downpayment requirement and basically roll the down payment into the loan.

Similar houses in our neighborhood are going for 300k now.

Oh, we're in southern Oregon.

We bought our first house in 1990 ( I was 23 & DH was 25) after living in a single wide 12X48 mobile for 3 years. The first real house was 3 bedroom 1 1/2 baths which we remodeled into a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath. It was a great starter house - older but big and had a full basement that needed work. We did lots of remodeling on it but really didn't put too much $ into it. We paid $37K for it and sold it 3 years later for $80K.

24, new condo on a golf course. Loved it...never should have sold it...but needed more room for the kids.

21, 3 Bedroom townhouse, we paid around $200.000 in 1999.

We bought our first home in 1983 for about $54,000. I was just starting medical school the next fall. We sold it when I finished residency in 1991 for about $90,000. It was tough making those payments through med school, but I guess it paid off. It sold last fall for $180,000! It was a tiny cape cod style home in Columbus, OH, with four rooms(two bedrooms, bath, kitchen and living room), 1 bath, and about 1000 sq ft (I think that must include the basement and attic.).

My brother currently lives in Minneapolis where he is the regional manager for a large company. His home in Minneapolis has five bedrooms and for baths. He will be moving to a new company this month. They will be moving to San Diego. It is a good thing their kids are now out of the house because he said there was no way he could buy a comparable house in San Diego. They plan to buy a smaller house and fix it up.

I considered California before moving to Florida since DD is into acting. I decided we could move to LA and live in an apartment or, we could move to Florida and purchase a nice home. We moved at the right time. We now have a four bedroom home in a very nice part of Orlando (10 minutes from WDW). Since we moved here, the price of my home has doubled. I really feel for young couples starting out trying to buy their first home.

Our first house we bought in Carrollton, TX in 2001 for $120,000. DH was 28 and I was 26. It was a 1961 ranch style home that needed more work than we realized. 4 BR, 3 Bath. We lived there for about a year and a half, then were transferred for work.

We rented until we moved here last year. We moved back to Iowa and bought an old Victorian. Built in 1890, the two car garage is a big red barn/an old carriage house. 3 or 4 bedrooms 2 bath, for $100,000. We were 29 and 31. We're hoping to sell it for $110-120 after this bathroom remodel we are finishing before we move. Not making any money on it, but just to get back our consruction costs.

It's in a great neighborhood. Wish I could move my neighbors with me.

It was in 1993. I was about 23, DH was 24. We were renting a house in Broomfield Co just outside of Denver. Our landlords were an elderly couple who decided to sell all their properties and move to Florida. We couldn't afford to buy that house, but didn't want to go through the whole "do you accept dogs" thing with landlords anymore either.

We scraped together and income tax return and emptied our savings to buy an 1100 sqare foot house for around $68k. We sold it for about $95k 3 years later when DH relocated to Texas for a job -- so we did very well with it.

Bought our 3 bedroom 1 bath home in Ohio in 1999 for 82K-this was an upgrade from a 1 bedroom apt with a new baby. We were 26.

We moved to KY to take a new job and bought a 4 bed 3 bath newly constructed home for 142K-more than tiwce the size of our old house.

Ironically-with a slightly lower interest rate and MUCH lower property taxes, our payment is lower here than our old home in Ohio.

We bought our first home in 1978 for $50,000. I was 27 and my DH was 26. It is a single family home with three bedrooms, family room, living room, 1.5 baths.

We still live in this house 27 years later.

Was it a condo, townhouse, house, duplex, other?

Optional Question: Was it below $100 k, $200k, $300k, $500k, $800k (starter shack in my area), Over a million?

I was 25yrs old and had been married for almost three years. It was and is a 3 bedroom ranch with a fully finished basement and an in ground pool. It was less than $150K. To think at the time we were worried about being at the top of the market, 1996. We could sell this for more then $400K now but then where would we go? You have got to love living in the North East.

I was 36, it was Jan. 1993, and the house was a shade under 100,000 (right around the median price of a house in my city). It's worth about 2 1/2 times what we paid for it and I feel very lucky we were able to buy it when we did--we are in a great location where homes appreciate a little faster than surrounding areas and I would hate to pay 2 1/2 times what I paid for it 13 years ago. Our salaries certainly haven't appreciated at that rate!

Just bought our condo in May for $148,900. We were 34. The last condo our size that I saw listed was $279,900. :earseek: Glad we were able to grab it when we did.

DW and I were 23 when we bought our first house in 1977. I don't remember what we paid, but it was well under $100,000.

I was 23 and DH was 27. We bought a 1 bedroom co-op and paid over $200K. These days they're going for closer to $300K. :earseek:
