How old were you when you got your first job?

What did you do?

Did you work during the school year? How much?

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?

What did YOU choose to do with your money?

Did you maintain your grades?

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?

I was 16. I also worked when I was 14-15, but it was not legal. SSHH!!

I worked as a waitress at Shoneys when I turned 16.

I worked after school until I hit the maximum # of hours they will allow a minor.
I moved out when I was almost 17, so I had to pay my own bills (luckily I had a room mate so we split the costs).

I worked for almost a year before I moved out, so I saved my money during that time so I COULD move out.

I still graduated with honors.

I did softball. We had practises during school and I took my days off during the days they were after school or games.

It was very hard , but I would do it again!

Putting the weekly ads on everyone's door, I was about 12. I don't remember how much it was, but I got paid monthly. It wasn't much.

I was in 8th grade. I answered phones and counted money in the Church Rectory. Usually 1 or 2 evenings a week and Sunday afternoons. I was also babysitting at this age.
Toward the end of Freshman year I got a job as Bingo the Clown at Ground Round (my brother got the same job about 5 years later). I worked there all through that summer.
After that I had misc other jobs...fast food (quit after 2 weeks), gas station cashier (about 6 months) and then finally my mom got me a job at Bally Midway where I answered phones in the evenings and during school breaks I helped out in the mail room. I worked there for a couple years.
As far as the money.....it was mine to do with as I pleased. Obviously once I had a car I had to pay for the upkeep on that, but I basically blew the rest of it on typical kid stuff...clothes, makeup, magazines, etc.

I was 12 and worked in the restaurant my mom worked in, bussing tables and doing dishes. Yes I did work during the school year. I didn't make much money though.

I was 14 right when I could. I worked for the Knights Of Columbus serving at weddings. It was the BEST job. All of my friends worked with me...and we would get asked to dance by guys our age at the weddings! LOVED IT. All the sedding were Friday Nights to Sunday nights (so yup I worked weekends!)

Two years later the 20 something guys got drunk in the kitchen. there was touching and a trial..very messy! And the girls that I was working with were worse off than me. It was a bummer.

I gave the money to my mom. We were pretty poor, so every little bit helped.

My grades never suffered! I knew I needed a fuul scholarship to college and I was on a full scholarship to high school. So I had to keep them up.

My Extras were track, voice, the plays, and I was president of the Right to Life club, Speach and Debate - treasurer and I won nationals, and by the time I was done; I had managed over 1800 serivce hours.

I kept busy! LOL!

I did a paper route after school for a local daily paper when I was 12 or so. I started working in a supermarket as a cashier when I was 15yrs. I worked all year round. Move hours when school was out.

How old were you when you got your first job? I was 17

What did you do? I worked at Burger King

Did you work during the school year? Yes I did. How much? About 4 days a week

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)? Whatever I wanted within reason. I had over $1000 saved after only about 3 months of working and that was back in the days when minimum wage was $3.15 and hour!!!

What did YOU choose to do with your money? I saved, went to movies or the mall with girlfriends, spent it on me and new boyfriend!! :teeth:

Did you maintain your grades? yep!!

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities? I sure did...the colorguard and I wrote on the school newspaper.

I was 16 and worked as a cashier at K-Mart. I made $3.45 an hour (minimum wage at the time).

I got off the bus a little after 2pm. I had to change into nicer clothes (you couldn't wear jeans while working at K-Mart in 1987) and walked the mile to the store. I got home after 10pm. They worked me to death! I had to quit after a few months b/c I didn't have time to do anything.

I was 14 years old.

I got a job with a jewelry store, wdoing small repairs and watch work...studying gemology and some sales (was full time sales by age 15)

I worked during the school year from 5-9:30pm a couple of days a week and 8 hours on sat and sun...there were laws about how many hours you could work but we cheated a bit...

My parents tought me how to save money, pay for myself...I bought my first car, paid cash! Paid my own insurance on the car..basically paid for anything I wanted above and beyond the basics...clothes, movies etc.

I managed to keep my grades up too, finished high school with a 3.8 GPA

Oh and I was a very busy kid too...did all of the band stuff (marching, pep, concert, jazz), student council and was vice president of the Thespians!

I was always busy..kinda burnt out sometimes...but i managed to stay healthy and in good mindset..for the most part....

I did this, too! Only, I was in college. It was a fun job! I can still fix my watch if the battery needs to be changed!

The day after I turned 15, I got a job at Little Caesar's Pizza and worked there all through the rest of high school. I earned $3.35/hour. During the school year, I worked a couple afternoons 4-7pm, and weekends. I used half my money for fun, and half my money was saved for college. My allowance stopped when I got a job (although my sister continued to get allowance all through college:confused: ). No problems with grades or extracurriculars. I was "only" in band, and that was mostly during school except for games and special trips.

My first job was the summer after I graduated from high school. I worked parttime in the mornings at the District Attorney's office. I did filing mostly. The money I made was mine to do with as I pleased. I think I used it to buy clothes and stuff to prepare for leaving for college.

my first after school job was when i was 12 and was a paper run (route) as you call them over there.

It was a great job as it didn't take long and the money was good to have. I used to spend the money on rubbish eg. lollies, movies, comics etc..

i didn't like having to do it in the rain though.

My grade were fine and it didn't really matter as it was only intermediate shcool which is before high school.

In high school age 15 i started baby sitting in the neighbour hood where I lived . It was good money and easy money, i liked children and had losts of activites planned for the children to do. When they were in bed a sleep that is when i did my home work.

I'm 20 and still have not had my first job. :(

All throughout high school, I never had time for a job. I was always very busy with my schoolwork, softball and bowling.

After my first year of college, I applied to a couple places in the summer, but never got any jobs. I did get called back to a pet store, but I didn't end up getting the job.

After half the summer was over and I didn't have a job, I realized I probably wasn't going to get one. I got done with my sophomore year of college and I applied to a few more places, but still no luck. My mom keeps yelling at me to get a job, but I can't help it if no one wants me. :(

I think my problem is that I'm 20 and I have absolutely no experience, which doesn't look good. I also can't apply for any jobs in my major (math), since I've only taken about 5 classes in it!

How old were you when you got your first job?

Age 10 for babysitting, up to about a thosand hours a year by my senior year of High school. 1.00/hr!
Age 14 Kresge

What did your parents expect you to do with your money (buy own clothes, pay for gas, put money away for college, donate to the household expenses, etc)?
1/3 to family, 1/3 to mom to save for college, 1/3 for me

What did YOU choose to do with your money?
clothes and chocolate! Both were luxuries in my house

Did you maintain your grades?

Did you stay active in extra-curricular activities?
