How old was your dd - bra?

I guess I have a slightly different take on this. I started wearing a bra the summer between 3rd and 4th grade. I needed it! I don't see it being a big deal if she wants to wear a bra at 8. If she doesn't need it, then it will be a passing phase.

My DD just turned 5, so I have a little while before I deal with this, but if she wants one at 8, then I will buy her one.

Ummm... I don't recall wearing one 'til I was 13 almost 14.

Personal experience i didnt wear one till i was 11, moved up to secondary school (im English), and ALL the other girls had them during gym. Went home to mom that evening and said that i really wanted one! I was really skinny and flat chested then, but being the wonderful mother she was, she took we out to M&S before the next gym lesson. I was NOT going to go through that embarrsement again! Deoderant wasn't really and issue. i didn't use it till secondary school ether, and my mom was just gave it to me and told me it stoped me from smelling after sport. I saw both my sister and my mom usung it so i just did too. Plus since its not really hot here most of the time, it didn't really matter for me.

Thanks Daisy. Yes, I know a lot of her friends wear them- certainly not all. I've seen them. Some need something underneath, some just want to be mini-teenagers. She does need something- you can see her nipples through a few of her shirts, but I also don't like you to be able to see the bra. You can definitely see the development starting to come- no more completely flat. But, I do think I may try one of the camisole tops- saw one today in JCPenney- may go back and get that. I teach 2nd grade and girls are really starting to develop fast these days. Anyway, I just don't like the idea of this- where is my little princess in pig tails? Oh, she also told me today that none of her friends wear shirts with Tinkerbell or people like that.
Anyone else have any ideas??

you can tell her that a LOT of high schoolers and older wear those characters so she'll just be more mature than her friends are. Then take a walk throgh Sears or JCPenney and show her the teen style with the characters. Even Hot Topic is in on it.

I wouldn't worry about the bra too much. It's when they stop asking you why women would want a see-through bra or one that doesn't cover you or any one of the million questions that my DD13 asked when we walked into Frederick's to buy me a bra. (one of the few stores that carry my size).

I try to talk my DD's out of it knowing that there may be a day that they actually hate "having" to wear the bra. They are 10 and 13 and both are wearing them. They are about the same developed too. The older one definately influenced the younger one into it.

I took DD out of her carseat (8 year old in PA) and bought her bras in the next few weeks. SHe needed them earlier but I just couldn't get over it.

This thread is giving me heart palpitations. Geezzz...I need some Nitro...LOL...My 6 year old is just starting to need deoderant, and I can't imagine that bras may be in our future in just a few years. Oh my...I'm actually speechless....and that's a first for me....
I don't even want to think about that stuff yet....

Me Too! I'm not even ready to think about this stuff yet . My DD is 7 but is the size of most 5 YO. She doesn't need deoderant yet luckily so maybe she will be a late bloomer, I hope. I'm hoping at least 10 or 11 on the bra and late as possible for her period , at least 13 or 14. I was 11 so I will probably not get that lucky. My DH says he is moving out when DD gets hers. She is already getting too grown up and gets and attitude sometimes .

My DD8 HAS to wear a bra every day.She is in the 95% in weight and height so she is not overweight but definitely not small.The Dr. actually examined her chest and said that though some is from "baby fat" she does have breast tissue.I started my period at 9 yrs old so I guess she is developing early too.

I started buying my girls the little 2 piece bra and panty sets when they were 3 or 4, so when to start wearing a bra was never an issue for us. Now they wear mostly sport bras, but dd10 is starting to wear some regular bras now. If they're wearing dark colored loose fitting t-shirts or a heavier shirt, they don't really need one, but if they have on a light colored shirt, they both definitely need one. They are 8 and almost 11.

My dd started wearing on in 2nd grade under most shirts because she needed it. She was a size DD by 12. She also started her monthly at 9 so I'm sure she was ahead of schedule. I personally see no harm in letting a child wear them even if its just because everyone else is. She may have girls in her class adanced like my daughter was.

My DD will be 10 in Dec. She has been wearing bras since she was 8. She is a competitive soccer player. It was a necessity for when you need to change jerseys at the field. I am glad she is OK and accepting of it. I did not want to have her develop and have to battle to get her to wear one. She wears them to school under certain shirts. I think she is more comfortable with them on. I also agree with the deodorant for all children age 8 and above. If you hang out at a school long enough, you will be able to tell which kids wear it and which kids don't. I also highly recommend the American Girl books. They are fantastic. We have had the period talk because I didn't want to have her in a panic one day. Now she knows if it happens, it is normal. It is all part of growing up. It happens to the best of us.

Young girls wanting to wear a bra isn't always about development or peer pressure. If they're wearing a tank top or sleeveless top, you can sometimes see well into their top, and they want it for coverage.
