I have my first child, so I'm doing the first mom worrying thing. My DS is 5 1/2 months old and isn't doing the following:

1. talking - not even mama, dada, just coos and screams (happy ones)
2. sitting up for more than afew seconds, then falls over
3. crawling

when was your child starting this?

Don't worry. It sounds like your baby is acting very age-appropriately.

My two older kids said mama and dada at 8 or 9 months. My third at about 10 mos.

My two older ones sat at 7 mos, third at 9 or 10 mos.

My two older kids crawled at 9 mos and the third was late at 12 mos.

No worries, it's still a bit early.

I don't remember DD saying Mama, Dada until about 7 months. My boys were a little later.

Sitting up for a few seconds at 5 1/2 months is great. They are still learning balance. Give him a few more weeks for balance.

Crawling that's a whole another story. Some kids don't crawl at all they go straight to walking. Some do a little army crawl. DD started crawling about 7 1/2 months. DS1 went straight to a hands and feet kinda crawl but not until 9 or 10 months (that was hilarious) DS2 I don't remember isn't that horrible! :scared1:

the only thing you ahve to worry about is if he is healthy and happy. Don't start doing comparisons on when he starts to do soemthing. I'm sure a friend or relative has got you worrying, saying their kid has done it already.

Don't buy into that. A long as he is doing it by he is a year old he will be good.

I am currently babysitting a 1 yr old who is just learning to put things in her mouth, feed herself. She had her parents really worried but I told them if you let her and give her something she wants bad enough, she will do it. And she does.....

She is moving along at a slower pace than my children did but it is appropriate for her. Being your first child, you should just be enjoying the stage he is at and not hurrying him along. relax, he will do all these things at his own pace.

DS3 was a year old when he was mama! He said "that" and "dada" at 7 months. Sat up without falling over closer to 8 months. Crawled around 8 months also. Walked holding on at 10 months, let go a little over 14 months,

My little one is almost 15 months. Talks more than DS3 did. Said mama earlier (around 9-10 months old). Crawled excellent at 9 months. Walks holding on, but not letting go. Not worried...he will walk. Doctor says all signs are in the right direction!

Don't stress...all kids are different. Remember, averages are based on younger and older ages too!

dd was a real late bloomer. did'nt sit on her own till 8 months, did'nt crawl until 11 months-no independant walking until 18 months. nothing medical going on, she just was'nt ready. i don't remember when she started saying actual words, but she has'nt stopped since (turns 14 this week:lmao: ).

ds was entirely different and was walking by a year. on the other hand he figured out that he did'nt need to talk because his big sister could do it for him. he'd just point to whatever he wanted and his compliant girl servant would take care of it (had to put an end to that and tell her he had to learn to 'use his words').

Oh geez! You're still SO early!

DD started saying Dada at about 7 mos, sitting up at about 6 mos, and crawled at 10 months, (and she's still not walking @12.5mo, but talking up a storm.)

LOL, you're not on ivillage boards are you? Those women are SO competitive with their babies' achievements. :confused3 Those women made me cry!

Don't stress over it and enjoy your little one all you can! They grow up so fast :)

Hugs!!

My baby just coos, laughs etc. - I keep thinking I am hearing "mom" but I think it's just "mmmmmmmmum" .

My baby, too only sits up for a short while. And she HATES being on her belly! My mom said not rush it! When they start crawling around she said "it's all over"!

All babies are different and according to all my "baby bibles" each milestone doesn't necessarily happen when it's "supposed" to happen.

I worry, too. ;) I guess it's just "new mom syndrome".

Is this your first baby?

If it is your first baby.... try to relax and enjoy these "baby" stages. Once they start talking they won't stop. Pretty soon you'll begging your little one to sit down and shut up. ;)

If it's not your first.... please try not to compare this child with your other children. Often younger siblings don't mature as quickly as the first born did.

5 1/2 months is still really early for all stuff you are asking about.

DD did babble, coo, and squeal before actually forming words, probably around 3 months or so. But it was just random noises, her testing out her voice. I know she started with dada around 8 or 9 months.

Sitting up unassisted happened between 6 and 7 months. It was closer to 7 months, but that was partly due to the fact that she was really sick with some nasty viruses (RSV followed by some horrible adenoid virus, which caused her first ear infection) that started on her 6 month birthday and continued for almost 3 weeks. (I remember this vividly because I don't think I've ever been that sick in my life before or since.)

Crawling was around 8 months.

Give it some time. If you are really concerned, discuss it with your pediatrician. You should have a well-baby visit coming up in a couple weeks, right?

DGD#4 will be six months old on Aug 1 and she isn't doing exactly what your little one isn't doing. I'd say they're both about perfect.

1. talking: DS just started talking about a month ago. He is 19 months old. He says mama, but dada very very rarely. DS has a communication disorder. He sees a speech therapist weekly and a developmental therapist every 2 weeks.

2. sitting up: 6 months exactly

3. crawling: 10.5 months. He started walking at 13m1w.

My little monkey was a little behind his daycare mates....but as his pediatrician says...."oh, don't worry, I am sure he'll get the hang of it before he goes to college!"

Was sitting up on his own right about at your LO age for longer periods of time, but I usually used a boppy for added support no matter what.

Crawling...heck no....didn't really show any interest in mobility, other than rolling, until about 9-10 months or so. He did the army crawl until he was 12 months, then he worked his way up to hands and knees. Now at 13 months, he will walk when you hold his hand and cruising alot along furniture, but that is it.

Talking....I have absolutely no clue what he is saying, but he babbles up a storm. He hasn't seem to relate any words with objects, but ocassionally he'll blurt out mamma when I am around (coincidence or true knowledge:confused3 ), and although I know he should be doing that now or soon, I am not worried because I know it will happen soon enough. I am trying to "explain" more to him because I don't think I am taking the time to do that alot, so we will see how that goes.

Just be patient. Don't compare and enjoy the peace and quiet and sanity of a non mobile little munchkin for now. You will get no time to sit when they start moving!

1. Around 8-9 months was mama and dada and actually meaning it for the intended person!! Some kids babble more than others though!! DD's did alot, DS did not!

2. 6 months for sitting up unassisted!

3. My kids did not crawl until about 8 months. They were very late crawlers compared to most kids I knew, but they walked early around 10 months, so they just didn't crawl for very long which I was okay with since it's hard to crawl in public (well not hard, but I don't like to let them!)

NO worries, it will all work out in the end. I don't know many adults that can't walk!! But I do know a few babies that never crawled and just went straight to walking!

All fine!

1. Both around 9 months or so. Boys sometimes take longer than girls, for whatever reason.

2. Around 6-7 months for DS #1. Around 5-6 months for DS #2 (who has always been more active).

3. #1- around 9 months. He did do the army crawl thing from about 7 months on, though. #2- can't remember! LOL- but I think it was around 7-8 months.

Walking didn't happen until after their 1 year mark, just so you know now! :goodvibes I was always around these parents whose babies started walking at like 10 months, but not mine! And you know what? Thank God! Once they start walking they become very stubborn because they realize that they can take themselves all over.

There is a book called "What to Expect the First Year". Its from the same people who wrote "What to Expect when your Expecting". Its goes through a babies development month by month saying what is normal, what is advanced, and lets you know when you should be worried. This book may help you since I think you are expecting a bit too much too soon.

DS was almost 6 months when he sat up for longer periods of time, crawled at 8 months (walked at 12 1/2 months), and babbled at 9 months (mama, dada, baba) .Started talking words at 12 months. It is still early and all babies develop on a different schedule.:goodvibes

You mean your infants aren't already saying their ABC's? They can't count to 800 in spanish and english???? Your baby doesn't read YOU bedtime stories??
:rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Ivillage mommies are definitely a competitive bunch!

To the OP, your baby is just fine! I would be shocked if your baby was talking at 5mths. That's not the normal timeline. (ok, my oldest started talking at 5mths...but it was weird then too! ;) )

sitting up on their own can be directly effected by how much tummy time they get. So many babies are sitting on their own much later than the 'experts' say they should because we no longer put our babies on their tummies to sleep. There is nothing wrong with a child who can't sit up unassisted for many more months.

My same child who was chattering away at 5mths didn't sit on her own until 9mths. She also didn't crawl until 10mths, she preferred rolling everywhere. She barely even crawled for a month before she switched to cruising and then walking. She is strong in her verbal development and at 10, language is still her strong point.

My other DD didn't start talking until very much later and didn't really speak 'english' until she was 3. She had her own language and was satisfied with that. But that DD was sitting early, crawling early and was cruising everywhere at 8mths. She didn't walk on her own though until after her first birthday! LOL She is strong in the physical part of her development, she's very physically active at all times.

My first son did all the physical things about the same timeline as DD#2 except speaking. He was speaking clearly by a year and is still more advanced in his speech than his older sister. He is very much my average child. I love that about him. I'm not constantly worrying about whether he needs to catch up on anything.

My last was my total anomaly, he spoke early, he walked at 10mths after crawling for many months prior. He's strong in both areas, physical/verbal so it can be problematic because he can think up new ways of terrifying me with his physical abilities....like jumping off the top step to the downstairs! :scared1: He was 6mths old when he figured out how to climb up and stand on the window sill and hang onto the window latches so he could look out the window! :scared:

I understand what your going through....I have been the same way with my DS.
He will be 8 months tomorrow :woohoo: He just started saying Mama and Dada at 7 months, he sat up on his own at about 6 1/2 months, and is still trying to get the crawling down (he gets up on his hand and knees and looks like he is winding up to do something). I do think the book "What to Expect the First Year" is wonderful....my copy is worn out!!!!

1. talking - about 8m months
2. sitting up- hmmm 3-4 months I think
3. crawling- 9 months, for a very short time, she walked by 10 mos
