How often unwanted HA or smoking rooms?

Please post whether you've ever been given an unwanted smoking room or HA room.
We've always asked FOR smoking, we've gotten NS twice. We've
never got a HA room

ALSO POST how many times you've stayed at DVC using points (and specified nonsmoking as a preference) so we can get an idea of the PERCENTAGE of stays involved.

We've stayed using our or rented (don't flame me) points about a
dozen times now. We've never as for NS

Finally, post if you've been in a nonsmoking room that had been smoked in.

On one of the two times we were given a NS villa I believe that some
previously had smoked in, or atleast on the balcony. It was a non
issue to us, my NS DW made no mention of it.

We have had 6 DVC stays and they all have been in non-smoking and not HA rooms.

We have had guests stay in 4 other villas, and they have all been non-smoking and not HA.

All of the rooms were smoke-free to our senses of smell.

Our only request for all of these rooms has been Non-smoking.

Totals so far. If someone stated 20+ I used 21 for number of trips. If someone took a smoking because it was offered as an early room, I did not count that. Two of the smokings it was mentioned that they couldn't smell smoke.

226 visits
17 HA (7.5%)
5 smoking (2.2%)

First stay as DVC members at BCV - requested N/S and got smoking optional room.

We always request non-smoking and have never received a smoking room.

Non-smoking is our only request. On our last 3 stays we were given HA rooms without requesting. VB, HH and OKW. They really don't bother me that much excpet that there isn't as much under counter storage space. We had trouble in OKW figuring out how to use the shower if you didn't want to use the hand wand. I'm thinking when we bring my younger nephew with us I may request non HA because I would prefer a bath tub.

If you do not want a HA room, you should probably request it when making your reservation.

2 (Actually, not sure OUR room had been smoked in or whether it just wafted up to us via air circulation ducts.)

Five trips. Requested NS. No mention of HA/Non-HA.

All five times we got NS and Non-HA.

Sorry if this has been answered before - the past is a blur these days ;).

Have we had a reasonably-official answer as to what percentage of DVC rooms are HC? How about smoking?

Thanks!

5 stays on DVC points. 1 unwanted HC room.

It was stay#1 at BWV.
I'd requested Non-smoking, Upper Floor.
Checked-in and got Smoking Optional, Handicapped-Accessible room on 2nd Floor.
Requested room change, and granted, no fee.

Never got a DVC non-smoking room that had been smoked in.

Slightly OT, but, I have gotten a WDW Hotel non-smoking room that had been smoked in. I've also gotten an AKL Handicapped-Accessible room that was unwanted. We'd checked in to AKL around noon, told room was not ready, but it did meet our requests (Near Lobby, Upper Floor, Non-smoking). Went off to parks and stayed out late at MNSSHP. When we went back to the front desk at AKL, they told us our room was a Ground Floor room quite far from the lobby. Oh well. Schlepped our luggage all the way there, opened the door and it was a HC room (the CM had not informed us this). I suspect they gave away our original room to someone who'd complained during the afternoon/evening. :( Anyway, we dragged our bags back to the desk and asked for another room, which they gave us.

I have gotte an HA room, but since I don't get hysterical over them I didn't consider it an issue. I also don't make that part of my request. (I fail to see why they are such a big issue. there are SOME legitimate issues, but most of this is just the "Not in my backyard" syndrome!)

Have never gotten a smoking room, my only request is non-smoking. My theory is that only having ONE request makes it easy for them to meet it.

(FYI checked into SSR tonight at 8:30 got wonderful room, studio, Nonsmoking with a great veiw of DTD!)

the only one I have info on is BWV. of 383

292 are NS and 29 are HA.
about 75% NS and 8% HA

the addition of the dvc sales area may change the overall numbers just a bit.

WOW...29 and the law says that for 400 rooms they only need 4.
Good job Disney in going above and beyond.

JUST A REMINDER, as quoted by OneMoreTry in opening post:

:crazy2: Please DO NOT POST your opinion about nonsmoking and HA room issues. There are other threads for that. Let's keep this clean and informative.
Are those official numbers or based off of the pdf spreadsheet you can download off this site?

We have checked into DVC accommodations 10 times, and have never recieved a HA or Smoking room.

A possible tip- MS told me that most, if not all of the dedicated 2brs at VWL are non HA.

Just a thought..... I love threads where we are told what we can post.. LOL! That is a fantasy!

For 400 rooms, this is what is required:
Total number of rooms in resort = 301 to 400
ADA requires 8 HA and 4 with roll in showers

(Here is a link to the ADA site that the numbers are from. ) There are actually 2 types of HA rooms. The first are HA, but not fully wheelchair accessible. Most people who get these rooms probably don't even realize they have HA rooms because they have tubs with grab bars and raised seat toilets with grab bars, but otherwise they are the same as a Non- HA room.
The ones people complain about are the fully wheelchair accessible rooms. Those rooms are pretty obvious because they have roll in showers, raised seat toilets, lower counters. They may have lower beds, but the mattress is usually pretty much the same.

The number of rooms Disney tells you when you ask about HA rooms can be sort of misleading. When I emailed DVC to ask about the number of Handicapped rooms at OKW, they did not break it out by HA and totally wheelchair accessible (the roll in shower rooms). So, I don't know how many of the rooms would just have grab bars and possibly higher toilets and how many have roll in showers.
I don't have the numbers anymore, so, I'm just using x and y.
The answer I got was that there were xx 1 bedrooms, xy 2 bedrooms and yy studios. If you added up all the numbers, it worked out to about 8% of the total OKW rooms being HA.
I added all the numbers together and emailed back to ask for clarification on how many of the total were lock offs; it turned that all but a couple of the 2 bedrooms were lock offs. Because most are lock-offs that can be used several ways, if you added all the numbers together, you actually come up with more rooms than physically exist. When I further clarified and asked if the total number of HA rooms was the number that I got by adding all the totals together, they answered that there were xy 2 bedrooms, with xx of them able to be used as 1 bedrooms, studios or combined together as 2 bedroom units and a couple that were dedicated 2 bedrooms.

5 trips--requests are ns, sometimes "close to elevator"(don't request this anymore)

never noticed a smoke smell, and ds and I both have asthma, so if it was there we would have noticed...so I think we've always gotten ns....

did get HA once at BCV---2 bedroom,ns, was close to elevator, so I think that's why....but we weren't told and had a 2 yr old, and it was definitely one of the HA accessible--the stove knobs would have been right at my 2 yr old's level. Called and asked for a change and was granted, no fee(but probably am now on the "naughty" list :teeth: )

Updated totals once again.

276 visits
22 HA (7.9%)
6 smoking (2.2%)

1 stay at VBR
1 stay at BWV
1 stay at BCV
1 stay at SSR
2 stays at WLV
30 plus stays at OKW

We always ask for non smoking. At OKW we ask for high floor and building 56. We've never been assigned a smoking room and we've never noticed a non smoking room that had been smoked in. We got a HA villa at OKW only once, odd thing was at check-in I specifically asked if this was a HA villa and was told no. We requested another room and the CM graciously assigned us another room more to our liking - we were not charged a room change fee. The first 2 or 3 stays were in studios all other stays were in larger size villas.

Based on other posts on this thread I'll consider myself very lucky in being assigned rooms that almost always meet our requests. For that matter we're at OKW now and not only did we get the building we prefer we actually got the exact villa we prefer.
