How often unwanted HA or smoking rooms?

I want to get an idea of how often people get unwanted HA or smoking rooms. I'm not sure how to word a poll to get an accurate result.

:earsboy: Please post whether you've ever been given an unwanted smoking room or HA room. Never

:earsboy: ALSO POST how many times you've stayed at DVC using points (and specified nonsmoking as a preference) so we can get an idea of the PERCENTAGE of stays involved. 18

:earsboy: Finally, post if you've been in a nonsmoking room that had been smoked in. Never in DVC (once at WL Concierge, but didn't include WDW hotels in #of stays)

Never. 1 or 2 stays per year since 1998. 3 of them at VB. Rest at BWV

Nope. Not even once.

Of approximately 20 DVC stays on points, we have had 2 unrequested HA rooms ( VWL & BCV ) and 1 unrequested smoking room ( VWL ). Each time the front desk was kind enough to move us - without charge - the next day.

One stay, requested non smoking, first floor, did not specify NH.

Arrived late, after 7 pm. Assigned first floor, non smoking, handicapped. There were only 2 rooms left, the CM was going to assign us one that was really far away from the HH. The other CM at the desk, suggested the handicapped one due to much better location.

Neither CM described the room as handicapped, it was suggested due to the better location.

When we got to the room, and saw it was handicapped, we were ok with it.
The location more than made up for it.

Next trip we have requested an upper floor, non-smoking. We'll see.

Updated totals once again.

276 visits
22 HA (7.9%)
6 smoking (2.2%)

I need more coffee or something...because I was wondering how SoCal could keep up with that many trips

Hmmmm. Let's see. WDW opened in 1971, I think. So that's 8 or 9 visits every year since then. He's probably a charter annual pass holder and independently wealthy. Most of us don't get that much vacation and DVC wasn't available until when - the mid-90's? ;) :teeth: ;)

P.S. Obviously, we all know SoCal was just tallying up everyone's responses so far. I thank him for doing the math that I, at least, am too lazy to bother with, LOL!

The sad thing is there is someone out there doing exactly that. Unfortunately I'm not him.

The current tally from all responses(HA and smoking % are going down).

374 visits
24 HA (6.4%)
6 smoking (1.6%)

Thanks for tabulating!

After reading the posts, it seems to me that some people are highly prone to receiving unwanted HA and smoking rooms and some are much less prone.

Is that due to the infamous "naughty" list? Or the way requests or made? Or the resort stayed at?

For those of you who always get the room you want, what is your secret?

I've never had either, but I don't know what the secret is, just luck I guess. We usually arrive between 1:00 and 3:00. One way to be more prone to HA is to request close to the elevator. I've stayed mostly at OKW and BWV, I don't think either has many smoking rooms.

Stayed three times: requests were nonsmoking only. One visit to each: OKW, VWL and BCV.

Non-smoking room was issued each time. None of the rooms appeared to have been smoked it.

Received handicapped only once (BCV). We could have moved, but I loved the location and view of our room, so we stuck it out (it was also only 3 nights).

I realized as I was typing that when we stayed only 3 nights we received a H/C room. This whole thing about H/C rooms on the boards seemed to start when someone got one and so did the sister. If I remember correctly, the sister was staying only one night. Do you think your length of stay has anything to do with getting a H/C room? Maybe they figure you're only here for a short time so you won't mind as much as a family staying for a week? Just a thought.
