How often do you get rung up twice for an item at a store?

With three kids doing the free radical dance while I'm checking out, I am guilty of not scanning my receipt closely enough to catch double billing on my purchases, even doing the math in my head before I get in the check out lane so I can spot a mistotal. I really never had a problem until lately.

I was in Old Navy and bought several things, figuring I'd see what matched other items at home and return the rejects. I never have time to leisurely try on with the kids... So, I get home and the very next day I returned several things. I was driving off thinking, 'that's good, now I only spent XX' and trying to think how much $ I returned vs. spent. It was then that I noticed a big discrepancy, three items (totaling almost $100) had been scanned twice!! I was SICK driving back thinking about having to convince the manager of my sincerity. He wasn't very nice the first time taking back the actual items. I was sure he wouldn't believe me about the double billed items. But luckily, I remembered the name of the woman who checked me out and some specifics of our conversation the day before (including the fact that her store didn't have my size, so I couldn't have bought two). He was actually very nice about it, and if he didn't believe me, he didn't let on.

Lesson learned - at a minimum, always count your items and make sure the total items scanned doesn't exceed your count. Next time, I might not be so lucky asking for the refund.

This happened once at Costco. We were going to a party and were in charge of the beer so we got a case. I got a bunch of other stuff too and it's not hard to get up over $100 in Costco so I didn't think about it when the cashier told me the total. When I got home and itemized my receipt in Quicken (thank goodness I do this or I might not have noticed) I saw that they charged us for 2 cases of beer! I called and they were very nice about it and the next time we were in there they gave me the money back.

I try to watch the prices while they're scanning items, especially at our local Publix because if they ring up wrong (the full price instead of sale price, for example) they give you the incorrectly rung up item for free!

I always check my receipt when I get home, especially if I was too distracted to watch the register while checking out. As I am checking out, if the clerks & baggers are chit chatting, I can usually expect an error.

I will go home & as I take each item out, I check it off on the receipt and make sure everything matches. Luckily, I live close to my grocery store, so it's not too far for me to go back, but it's still aggravating to do so. If I went to another store that is too far away to go right back to, I will call right away & talk to the manager and let them know, then write their name on the receipt so they can fix it when I go back.

This happens to me ALL the time at WalMart!! Once they charged me 3 times for a box of granola bars! Last week they charged me twice for a pack of pacis. At least I live close so Im always in there and dont have to drive out of my way for my refund. It still drives me nuts though!!!!!

I have only been double-charged once in the past year - at Target. And fortunately we noticed before we left the store, so we got our money back quickly. I like to watch as things are rung up - but if I can't for some reason I at least try to listen to the beeps - quick double-beeps always snap my head to attention!

There have been times something has accidentally been scanned twice, but the cashier has immediately recognized and taken it off without me saying anything.

Its sad but true, I check every receipt before leaving the store now. Even the large grocery orders. I also use self check-out as much as I can, and even though people are sighing behind me, I take as much time as needed to make sure it is correct.

The first thing I did to help this problem was to add an additional 15 minutes to my time needed for each store. This way I didn't feel like I was rushed to look it over. Sometimes, I get out sooner and that is just a plus for me... (aka - sit and sing songs by myself in the car stress reliever!!:lmao:)

For a few trips to Target, I noticed that some coupons were not showing up on the reciept and I'd get the money back from CS. One day, DH looked at the Target receipt and saw that some of the coupons he used weren't listed. He then looked at the overall total, did the math in his head and realized that the missing coupons were deducted from the overall total. There was no listing for the coupons on the receipt though....you had to do the math to figure out that they had been calculated into the overall total.

It seems that when they override a coupon, it doesn't list it as a subtracted amount, but just figures it into the total. We felt horrible that over a few months, we had gotten about $5 back that wasn't really owed to us. I think it's something that Target needs to work on because I'm sure we're not the only ones who thought we were being mischarged and asked for money back.

I have been pretty luck, I always try to watch and make sure I don't hear double beeps.

Ugh...I have a 3 year old that always becomes unruly at check out. I seem to always be overcharged or doubled for something.

I was at a store last week and picked a candy dish off the end of the aisle that had a sign marked $2.85. I happened to notice that it rang $3.95. I mentioned it to the cashier and she said, "Well, you have to match the numbers w/what was on the shelf w/the sign" I had did that. Went back and double checked and said, "Yes, that is supposed to be $2.85" She blantenly ignored me and just gave me my total. :confused3 Are you kidding me? I said, "If you aren't going to be helpful, then just take the dish off" Another cashier overheard and had to tell her twice that was what they were marked. I know it was ONLY $1.10, but man that just happens all the time and hurts my wallet after awhile!

Just last week at Target I bought a $1.00 reusable bag. Looked at my receipt at home and noticed he had charged me for 2. I go to Target every Monday, so just kept my receipt in my wallet and waited until this week, took it to CS, told them what happened and without even blinking an eye, she gave me the money back. Could be because it was only $1.00, but still it was easy even though it was a week later.

I try to check my receipts, but probably need to be more diligent about it.

My last two trips to the grocery store I have been overcharged. The first time it was ice cream, regularly priced at $5.49 that rang up for $6.29 - there are NO ice creams of that brand that even cost $6.29! I talked to CS and they had to run back and check, and of course they looked at the wrong ice cream and tried to charge me $5.99, so I politely told them that it was $5.49 (as I had previously stated and explained) and evevntually I got my $.80. A few days ago, we were using the in-store coupons, one was for BOGO, and of course they only did it as $1.00 off, instead of the $2.80 off that it should have been (argh!). DBF told me not to worry about it, but it is annoying. We all work hard for our money (and hard to work the deals so that we can SAVE our money) and there is no accountability for the stores.

I would start shopping at another grocer, but this one is the cheapest by far, so I guess I will just have to keep watching my receipts like a hawk...memorizing the prices of everything I buy is a good brain workout I guess:thumbsup2

I guess I'm in the minority, I can't remember the last time in years that I've been double charged. I always watch the register and double check my receipt before I step away from the cashier. Even in Walmart.

When shopping Summer sales at Kohls, I noticed that everything was ringing up exactly $1.00 more than the sale tag price. If I hadn't noticed, it would have cost me $8 more. I told the cashier after I saw the 3rd item ring up and she looked at the tags and said in a really snotty tone, "Well, I bet these racks weren't supposed to be put out on the floor yet." I told her that they came off of a bunch of different racks throughout the kids dept but she didn't seem to care. She was just po'd that she had to re-ring up those 3 items.

This seems to happen very frequently at Meijer. I've learned to watch very carefully as it gets rung up! That's always hard with the penny-ride-on-horse so near the cash register and a little child in tow! :)
