I have been lifting for 10 years. Going real heavy doesn't burn as many calories or build as much muscle as lifting for reps in the 8-10 range. The heavier you lift, the less reps you can do and the less blood is pumped into the muscles. However, if pure strength is your goal, then heavy lifting is the way to go. I do agree with one thing though. After a week of eating at WDW, the carb overload and subsequent muscle rest will give you the energy needed to have really productive lifting sessions.
DH is really into lifting, so he keeps me informed. He prefers to lift heavy, because it is more about strength to him than body composition. Even though he could probably get bigger by lifting smaller amounts of weight, he chooses not to. Not that he is not big, because he is. Huge muscles do not always equal strength at least from what he tells me. The OP can try it your way too as long as she lifts and does not just do cardio. She should take advantage of those calories.
