Our family of 4 is going on the 10 hour LA/Hollywood/Warner Bros. tour. The tour costs $125 each. How much should I tip the tour guide? It will be a van of 8 people on the tour, our 4 plus 4 other people. Thanks.

Have you contacted the tour company to ask about their tipping policy? Sometimes guides are not allowed to accept tips, sometimes they are. I would contact the tour company to ask if this is expected and, if so, what is the suggested amount.

I had done that , but hadn't heard back yet when I posted on here. They did respond last night and said they would be thrilled with 10%. I'm glad I asked, because I had been wondering if 20% was the norm, that would be A LOT of extra money on a $500 tour...

10% would be fine and quite generous IMO.. plus guests frequently share water, snacks, or food with the tour guide who spends the whole time focusing on talking or helping you do what you want to do.
They even suggest tipping the Disney VIP tour guides, which you pay $400-$550 PER HOUR with a 6 hour minimum... Even 10% would hurt :(

Yes, we tip on the VIP tours. The guides generally go above and beyond. We always supply water and meals also. On the VIP tours we do, I generally tip about $20 per hour. I don't know enough about the Anaheim Tour to give a true answer.

While VIP tours are very expensive, the guides are paid close to minimum wage.
I have tipped VIP guides from $100 up to $400, depending on the size of the group and how "magical" the tour :wizard:

I have no experience with the Anaheim Tour Company, but this is my advice:
If it is primarily a transport service (handling the logistics of moving to several locations), $5-10 per person.
If the tour guide stays with the group all day sharing interesting information, $20-40 per person.

I just finished reading a book written by a former Disney VIP tour guide. They only get paid the low Disney wages, like $10 or so an hour. Tips are very much appreciated, although technically they are supposed to donate them to charity, at least that was true when the book was written. They do get free meals at the parks, though. According to the author, they were the only cast members to get free meals, drinks, snacks, etc. They had a special card that would pay for these. It was because they never were given "official" breaks, they usually had to grab quick bites while the VIP tour guests were actually on the rides.

It has changed significantly since that book appears to have been written. Guides are still paid low wages (I think in the $12 range), however, they are allowed to accept tips, and they keep the tips. One of the few positions outside of servers that is a tip accepting position. They technically are to take breaks, but if there are rest periods during the tour, they can count that as their break. They no longer have to dash off stage during a tour to clock out and back in. Senior guides are issues cards for emergencies, such as being invited to a meal with a family and then being handed the bill for their meal. (I can't imagine doing this to a guide, but been told it does happen.) Our guides almost always ride with us.

I did the tour last year in November and it is fabulous! We are doing two more tours with them this year too. I am always unsure on how much to tip as it's not something we do here in Australia! The suggestion of 10% is good to know, I'll go with that:thumbsup2
