Well, my parents raised me to tip at any hotel and I have always tipped. ($2/day for average service and $3 or more a day for excellent service. $1/day for less than average service and maybe nothing if I had truly poor service- it's not happened to me yet.) In fact it surprised me to learn that it wasn't on the list of tipped positions. However, tipping is a personal thing, and income, level of service, etc. are all factors.
My Disney mousekeepers have always gone over and above job requirements- leaving the little stuffed animal scenes, towel animals, fanning out my makeup brushes, etc. I would have felt terrible not acknowledging all of that effort and creativity. I'm a teacher

and I can tell you getting a little picture frame or card or letter from a student means A LOT. It makes me feel so good and makes me more motivated and helps me put up with the ones that give nothing but attitude!

That's why I tip. I am sure it helps them put up with the filth left by other guests. It feels nice to know your hard work is appreciated.
As far as guests who leave filth and nastiness behind, often not attempting to clean it up at all (accidents notwithstanding) I think that is
much, much worse than not tipping. (though I would make a bet that a good percentage of filth leavers also do not tip

) Those who treat the room like a pigpen shock me b/c I am sure they wouldn't do that in their own home!
