How Much $$ to re-SIZE a Ring?? WHAT????

I think it should be mentioned that sizing up requires adding metal in this case gold - not just labor. It costs the jeweler $ to add gold. It costs the jeweler nothing but time to size down.

Gold and all precious metals are at an all time high right now so unless you have had a ring sized recently you may be surprised. Of course there are some that have a good rapport with their jeweler and that would be a different case entirely.

To the OP--yes, your jeweller's set up sounds funny to me. I would try somewhere else. I have had a number of rings sized up by one size recently, and as I recall, none of the "simple" resizing cost me as much as $100. As I understand it the variables involved are: the thickness of the ring band--and how it is contoured; whether any of the stones have to be removed/reset; and the material involved--18K. is more expensive than 14K., for example. FYI, as far as I know, if you didn't purchase the ring in their shop, most reputable jewellers will also test the diamonds in front of you, to ensure they are all the real deal and not CZ for example--they do this as protection for you both, so that they can write up the work order and invoice correctly.

I recently had my platinum wedding set upsized (both rings). It was $175 and I thought that was a bargain. The jeweler was onsite at a small, privately owned shop. I talked to her on Monday afternoon and she had it ready Wednesday morning. She actually charged very little for labor, it was the cost of adding the platinum that made it so expensive. I was very, very uncomfortable in giving my wedding set to some chain store and having it shipped it away so I'm glad I was able to find someone local. Honestly, to be able to wear my rings again was totally worth the cost for me and we're actually taking DH's ring in next week to see if she can adjust his also. If you're getting weird vibes, I'd definitely look somewhere else.

Thanks everyone!
You have been very helpful! .
The place I went too is actually a reputable shop that has several locations, so I was comfortable till after my experience with them.
They did not "explain" why I was originally told so much less or even try and make an excuse, just rather matter of fact. ;)
I did check the underneath of the diamonds (as one of you suggested:hug:) and YES, they do go thru a bit (I actually thought they were just pave/flakes :lmao:, but apparently not) so now I may need to be concerned about loosening them too?? UGH! :confused3

The bottom shank of the ring is tapered from the wide width top, and it is all 14Kt gold, so I don't see why they just would not cut thru it (as someone mentioned) then add gold and Wah La, but thats just me probably simplifying it....
Now, I am going to bring it somewhere else and then see what they say. I just know I will NOT leave it anywhere and it will need to be done with me there. I am also going to be sure I have a receipt in hand that shows the carat weight etc...I'm pretty sure I have the original paperwork for this one.....
Meanwhile, still have naked hands :sad2: and I have a party tomorrow too....disappointing

I got an estimate from a local jeweler that I'd used before and didn't like the price. My Anniversary Band, with my wedding band attached, had gotten too big. I had been using a little metal "sizer" on it, but it broke. They told me that it was a complicated job, that stones would fall out if they didn't do it "right".

I found another local jeweler who did it for a lot less and I'm very happy with it. It's been a couple of years and none of the stones have fallen out!

So I say: shop around.
