Debating flying for 5 cheapest about 1400 with not so good times..would stop once both ways ...gas ,tolls, any estimates?

I can tell you that we have driven to Orlando from Raleigh, NC and I have a Honda Pilot. I think we get similar gas mileage. I have a 20 gallon tank that I fill before we leave. We need to fill on the trip, again just after we leave to come home, again on the trip, and within a day after getting back. So that is a total of 5 tanks at $3.69 a gallon (average) You are looking at $370 for gas just from NC to Orlando. If you need a hotel both ways that is at least another $250....I can't comment on tolls as we have never hit them when we drive. Food which would be (for 5 people fast food) 2 meals each day another $125. Not to mention wear and tear on your car. Have you looked into AMTRAK? We wanted to try it out this year and it is very reasonable. We can take AMTRAK from Raleigh, NC to Orlando for $280 round trip for the 4 of us.

You might want to try this site:

http://fuelcostcalculator.aaa.com/

That will give you your gas costs. If you are unwilling to pack sandwiches and such for eating on the road, then figure in meals "out." Otherwise, your food costs can be very reasonable.

If you want to break the trip into 2 days, you can stop in SC or GA or Northern FL, just off of I95. For instance, the Hampton Inn in Port Wentworth can often be had for a family of 5 for around $100. That also includes their breakfast. If you want, you could also leave NJ in the overnight hours for the way down, and arrive in FL that evening. That way you avoid a hotel charge going there.

I would recommend stopping overnight on the way back, which will keep your lodging costs to about $100 if you poke around. :wizard:

Over on the Driving For 2000+ Miles thread on this forum there's loads of info! Hope that helps!

If you use this website the day before you leave, not only will it tell you the total fuel cost but it will also tell you when you should refill based upon speed, fuel consumption of your vehicle and distance. It will also tell you where the cheapest gas station is at the point where you should be refilling. The info is based upon the gas prices posted that day.

Well, I'm not sure how much it takes to get to WDW from Jersey, but to WOW? That journey runs you a cool 14.99 a month, but you can't travel on Tuesday mornings :-)

For our family of 5 I do it for around $750 from Bergen Co, NJ. Oh and I drive a gas guzzling Dodge Ram 2500! (includes gas, tolls, and hotels). your car should be better on gas than mine.

Pros: We stop both ways, have our own car to do other things down there, don't have to worry about bagage weights or not being allowed to bring what we want......and bring back fireworks.

Cons: stuck next to wife for 17 hours with no place to hide.

Our Grand Caravan gets around 20-25 mpg on the highway. We use 6 tanks total, so our June trip cost around $400. Food was about $100. We drove straight through, so no hotel.

Total trans cost $500 plus $15 for tolls.

Our trip in January 2009 cost $250 for gas ($1.89/gal). :thumbsup2

We will be driving from MD again. Last time we took my DH's Camry b/c of gas. but now we have a Traverse and it is too comfy to drive in to NOT use.

Based on the website above they calculate our fuel cost will be about $400 round trip. Hotels will be about $300 (we stop going down one night and coming back one night) plus meals each day of driving-probably $160 on food.

So around $860-but for us that is still a better idea than trying to get flights Thanskgiving week.

Yep just did NJ to Ft Myers to WDW to NJ and cost just over $600.00 for gas in a ford minivan with a bubble storage on top.

we stayed overnight 2 nights down and back... $500.00

Brought a ton of stuff including sons hockey goal equipment so airline baggage fees would have killed us...
