You would pay whatever the difference is between your tickets and the AP cost.

Do you have to first use the ticket and then go to customer service inside the gates to get the full value for the ticket (like for disney)?

I think you can do it at the ticket windows outside the park but not 100% sure.

you can also do it inside the park without penalty to upgrade.
go to guest services once you enter the park.

Do AP holders get FOTL access or can you add that to the pass?

no. having ap's have nothing to do with fotl. it can not be added but you can buy the express pass plus.

Onsite hotel guests receive the FOTL during their stay.

What is the express pass plus and is it added to the pass or is it separate? Sorry for the questions but we are newbies to IOA/US...we thought that now that we live 20 min. away we'd become pass holders. :)

Express Plus passes are separate passes that are available for purchase to all guests. It entitles you to one trip through the Express line on every attraction execept Pteranodon Flyers at IOA. Since you are now living as close to the parks as I do, I wouldn't fool with ever getting Express passes to the parks since you can come and go anytime you want. The only AP that includes Express is the Premier AP and one of the benefits is unlimited Express after 4pm. Since the parks close early, you would only be able to take advantage of it during really busy seasons when the parks are open later. Here's the link from the website:

It is a personal choice of which AP to purchase.

like metro stated, if you live near the parks and go frequently, the preferred pass would be sufficient.
go and stay as long as you like then leave when the crowds come.

if you work during the day and only can go to the parks after 4, then the premiere pass allows you to use the express lines after 4.
it also has other perks for the holder.

it all depends on how you plan to do the parks.
go many times after 4 or go, enjoy the parks, leave when it is crowded.

if you follow the link metro posted, you will see the cost difference of the 2 passes.

So would you recommend getting the premier AP?
Personally...I don't think it's worth the extra money to get the Premier pass. The renewal of the Preferred is only $117.00 as opposed to basically buying a new Premier every year. You would have to decide how you're going to use the pass and if the added benefits would be helpful to you. I've had my Preferred pass since 2004 and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon...but that's me.

Thanks! Can you tell me when the summer crowds start calming down? I've very familiar with Disney but not universal.

The summer crowds start to calm down around the third week of August since a lot of schools are back in session by that time. After Labor Day, the parks are not that busy at all.
